cabinet / sofit question. need your help please!!!

I need help with tht sofit and cabinet gap as you can see in the picture.

I recently installed the cabinets but there is a little gap between the sofit and cabinet .

Also as seen in the picture what can be done for the empty space were the sofit ends.

I looks quiet odd.

Need suggestions please.

First and foremost, thank you all for taking out your precious time to guide me in the right direction.

As a first-time homebuyer, this journey has been a huge learning experience for us.

I know there are some mistakes made along the way, but each one has taught us something valuable.

The cabinets are installed and next week countertop will be done. I will post the final picture of the kitchen:)

The contractor extended the sofit.

Order a smaller cabinet. That mismeasure is just ridiculous.

That looks bad. Not the gap but the cabinet sticking out past the soffit, and touching the door trim. Agree, must replace with narrower cabinet that lines up with soffit.

You need to order a smaller cabinet that fits the space.

Maybe its the picture perspective but it appears the soffit blocks the top of the cabinet on the right side. is that accurate?

What do the base cabinets below this wall cabinet look like?

Unfortunately, there are so many things wrong here, as everyone else has already stated, starting with the wrong cabinet size. Can you show pics of the rest of the kitchen? Who designed, ordered, and installed?

I think the strategic placement of a taxidermied fox squirrel on the cabinet beside the soffit will render the gap nearly unnoticeable, or at least purposeful.

I do not have the expertise to photoshop an actual squirrel into the picture.

Thank you all, for your great advices.

The contractor said he will extend the sofit which aligns with the the cabinet.

    Is that a good idea?

He is charging us extra for that:(

No words. Yes extend the soffit but can you make it be level this time?

The cabinets should be narrower, so they end at the soffit, for it to look right. They should never have been that wide. You can only have widths, that fit the room, you are putting things in, and those are way too wide. Also the trim is not right for the type of cabinets you have, and that should be changed too. It will also look nicer by the door area, when the cabinet isnt right up to the door moulding.

Actually we never thought about the crown molding.

    First time home buyer:(

Contractor is saying the molding runs thru out the family room and kitchen.

He said it is not possible:(

We are extending the sofit and he will level the cabinets properly so that no gap is seen.

Actually there is a little gap between the sofit and cabinets thru out which annoys me.

" He said it is not possible:( "

Meaning he does not want to do it. Anything is possible.

We don't have a front view of the base and wall cabinets but with the angle view you posted I'm not sure if the wall cabinet extends further than the base cabinet, they should be aligned.

If he made the kludge, yes it is a decent idea and no he should not be charging you extra to fix his mess.

With the additional pictures it reinforces my earlier observation. why does the soffit wrap over the top of the cabinet frame. can the door open without scrapping the soffit?

Extending the soffit will virtually collide with your window trim and make it look even more amateur. And you'd have to redo all the crown there, IF you can match it. Just buy the smaller cabinet and take the L.

Another vote for a smaller cabinet. Judging by the photos you've shown, I am not confident that your contractor could extend the soffit and crown and make it look even halfway decent.

Did you see a 3D rendering of that wall before you approved the cabinet design?

The top panel of the cabinet box does look like it is recessed into the soffit (like they removed the bottom drywall on the soffit), and the thin soffit front extends down haphazardly (as wsea noticed). Make sure all the soffits are cleanly and wholly above the cabinet top panels. Assuming it may be accomplished by just raising the soffit cornerbead.

And the angled corner wall cabinet sits forward of the soffit…another perch for a taxidermied squirrel?

Remove the crown molding yourself, it should be pretty easy.
I think it will call less attention to the soffit.

No one has mentioned it yet ... go back and look at the second photo, full shot of the kitchen. Look at the upper corner cabinet! It should not have been an angled cabinet that sticks out in front of the soffit. Your contractor has no design abilities.

I noticed it. She has a lot of problems there, unfortunately. It might be time, to hire a different contractor, and start all over, even if using all the same materials.

You've got at least a four Yikes kitchen.

YIKES #1: Wall cabinet extends past soffit.

YIKES #2: Traditional crown moulding with contemporary cabinets.

YIKES #3: Angled corner wall cabinet with square soffit.

YIKES #4: Cabinets to a soffit on one side of the kitchen and cabinets to the ceiling on the other side.

Unfortunately someone has unsuccessfully tried far too hard to be creative with very disjointed pieces and parts, and in all honesty, salvaging this kitchen will require a major overhaul.

  • PRO

Well, it certainly has problems but does not require a complete overhaul. It could be fixed by

    1. narrower cabinet where the soffit doesn't align.

    2. change out the upper corner cabinet to align with soffit--perhaps a lazy susan cabinet? or something like this?

The traditional crown molding was a fail, but if you didn't notice it previously, you can live with it. Ditto for the soffit on one side but not the other. Not something I would have done, but not worth the cost to change it now.

Where Mark has the "?" is also weird, but you can live with it.

Most basic stock RTA cabinets do not provide an EZ reach corner, nor even blind corner uppers. The contractor would have to field kludge a blind corner or void corner, with new cabinets there. There's such a thing as "just stop the bleeding to save the patient". They may need a heart and lung transplant down the road, but at the moment, they need to just fix the damage inflicted by the car accident.

While I don’t disagree with what others are saying is wrong here, I think it’s important to consider the money and time spent already. We can make the best of this. It’s going to be a very nice space.

I agree with little missdena. People here get over-enthusiastic. . They go beyond the question, and over analyse.

The average family member, friend or neighbor wil just see a nice renovated kitchen.

Correct the soffit and move on.

    Enjoy!

Who selected, signed off on, and ordered this mess of cabinetry? Lordie! But, I concur with the ever reasonable @Diana Bier Interiors, LLC - fix both points that she mentioned, then enjoy your bright new kitchen. And, never use again the person who made these selections.
