3200 or 3500K all the same except in the garage where you can go whiter. You also should supply 70-80 footcandles or at least 450 lumens task lighting at the counter for work zones.

Color is one factor. You want enough light for good function. If you don't know the amount at the counter, you haven't completed the job.

I found 3500K optimal for the kitchen only. You can find 3500K bulbs of various types, recessed lights with selectable color temperature including 3500K, and 3500K LED tape lights.

Thanks, everyone everyone. We tend to use 3000k in most of the house (we like a cozy mood in the evenings) and 4000 in the bathrooms; 3500 in the kitchen seems like a good way to go.

Ugh to 4000K in the bathroom = I look older and more bedraggled than I am with all that harsh light.
