Do these trees need to be the same?

last month

I have a pair of lamp posts on separated by 30 to 40 feet apart in my front yard (flanking a horseshoe driveway entrance).

I had a pair of Sango Kaku Japanese Maples planted as “anchors” near each lamp post (1 tree per lamp post).

Unfortunately, I lost one and it most likely had a lot to do with it being more exposed to winter winds.

The other is growing beautifully and I hate to mess with it. I don’t want to move it and especially now that it’s leafing out.

To fill the void on the other side, I’m considering a flowering dogwood… and even considered replacing the other Sango JM with a flowering dogwood later this fall, to have a matching pair.

However, if I leave the JM and have a single flowering dogwood on the other side, would this seem odd? I like Japanese garden style and I know it’s based on asymmetry. However, the trees would symmetrically be across from each other near the lamp posts.

Thoughts on this? Thanks.
