it looks like two 12 inch frameless cabinets because they didnt want a single 24 inch wide cabinet with the wide door to open there. its true that the narrow cabinets have somewhat diminished usefulness but on the other hand the point of reducing the size for ergonomics of door size is a factor. 21 inch wide single cabinet with some filler against the wall is your consideration . or live with what you have...... add more shelves and store small things that dont demand frequent visits to these cabinets. packages of napkins.....holiday plates....boxes of your granola bars/ coffee / tea bags/ surplus canned tomato sauce/ soup etc.

Thank yes we have been storing smaller things in there but need some more space for larger items. we were thinking of changing the orientation of the the door so they both open outwards.. i guees my main question is the dividing wall structural at all and would it create any problems on removing?

With frameless cabinets it’s certainly structural. You need to remove both 12” wide cabinets and have a carpenter/ woodworker/ handyman reconfigure it into a 24” wide cabinets with a new back, top, bottom, and shelves.
