Suggestions for wall color & lighting

We are in the process of remodeling an old farmhouse. I am TERRIBLE with understanding color scheme and lighting. I am not sure if we should tear down the paneling and start over or if we should paint the paneling. I know the right answer if money weren't a concern - hire a professional to drywall and paint, etc. Regardless, I am open for suggestions on paint color and lighting. Right now, there are only 2 floor lamps, one on each side of fireplace. My hubby is knowledgeable with wiring/electrical, so lots of options, but I just don't know how to make this area cozy and inviting vs gloomy and sad. (I tried to digitally cover up photos for privacy, so please ignore the mess on bookshelves. 😉) This is the couch that will be used in this room.

I’d paint it a creamy white color.
Is there anything under the carpet?
The sectional is far too big and too dark tbh.
Seems like a really cool project with loads of potential! I’m excited to be part of this and see where it goes 💖

The room is, as you describe, dark and gloomy. WHY A BLACK SECTIONAL?!?!?!?! Literally the darkest gloomiest option? Removing the paneling and putting up Sheetrock is the best option which you seemed to dismiss… cost? Hassle? Lack of local tradesman? With the paneling gone you could put in wood floors which would ground the space and get two sofas in a lighter color- caramel leather for instance- plus some chairs.

Yes, we own the sectional...this picture is the exact one, Ours has been in storage for a while.

I didn't dismiss sheetrock... I don't know anything about it, so I will look into it. This carpet goes through most of the house, except kitchen/dining area and bathrooms. Plywood under it.

Pull down the paneling, provides easy access to walls to run new wiring. Put up drywall, paint a neutral white, wood toned floors ( site finished hardwood, engineered, or lvp).
