Help my “bring me sunshine” please

Can anyone tell me what I can do with bring me sunshine ?

I thought maybe I had chili thrips .. but maybe it’s midge . Nothing else has it .. everything else is blooming or about to .

My bms is about as tall as me , with no buds , save one at the bottom .

The height looks like new growth if i remember correctly I did lightly prune it in Jan .

Here’s pics of my budless tops . I so badly want to see it bloom !

It was lovely last year .

Do I cut it back and use an insecticide in case it is something ? Or try to train it like a climber ? I’d love to know what you think !

The bloom here is port sunight and the buds on the left are juliet

Your BMS looks so healthy! Perhaps it just needs more time? Or maybe its a heavy feeder?

Lilly, I would stop giving nitrogen and cut off blind shoots. IMHO.

In my climate this almost never happened for the first flash.

Elena , have only fed it once with rose tone , and that’s all. I had no problem with it last year . is rose tone high in nitrogen? im not sure .. my brain never understands those things lol

    Here’s a pic of my suspected damage , I thought I posted it but I didn’t .

Either way i will cut it back .. do I go down low or just take a foot off ?

Thanks jj - it was lovely last spring and i was so excited to see it this spring ! Hopefully it recovers .

Only one brianch has this damage tho

@Lilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca, IMHO it looks like Thrip/Chili Thrip damage. ’Tis the season here… :(

Ok glad for the confirmation !! ugh why so soon lol

Forgive my ignorance because we dont have chili thrips here but do they affect bloom production?

@Kristine LeGault 8a pnw, you are so lucky!!! Chili Trips suck…literally! The buds and baby leaves get deformed. To my eyes, instead of a pointy tip on a young bud, its flattened, bumpy and ultimately turns brown. If the flowers open they are very small and ugly. I just debud them.

The only way I’ve been able to deal with Chili Thrips is to spray spinosad early onto baby leaves well before buds even form. Generally, they are problematic when it starts to get warm here in SoCal, but they’re here already.

@Lilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca, I’ve never used that product. If I spray it’s only been with Captain Jack‘s Deadbug. I use it early and minimally.

No evidence of midge, Lily. The growing tips would look like a match was taken to them, shriveled, fried crisp, and terminal growth halted. Plus you may be able to see the live maggots of the midge fly bg peering way inside of the damaged tip. They are the size of half a thistle seed! Also, Rose Midge Fly has not regularly been reported as present in California, has it?

I think you just have a young rose just settling in. In time I bet it will kick into its typical growth/blooming habit. Look at the photos on HMFR, Bring Me Sunshine has spectacular blooms, but the bush shots do not show a constrained, small garden sized bush.

    Time will reveal all.

Have you taken a look at Double Easy Orange? It appears to have constrained growth. DEO is on my short list, not proceeding further until I know for certain that it is black spot proof/resistant. The bloom really appeals to me. Our Jim is growing it and last year (2024, its first for him, I believe), it had a great run

Did you plant zinnia this year?

    Moses.

Double Easy Orange is one of my favorite roses. I had a hard time resisting a second plant, which would have crowded things. I agree with Moses about your rose--a young rose settling in. Years ago, I tried Captain Jack's early on for a couple of roses with regular thrips, and it was worthless. Diane

I use Spinosad for thrips. And, has been mentioned, it must be applied early, before evidence of thrips. This year I sprayed early while the plants were only beginning to leaf out and for the first time in six years, my spring flush has not been a disaster of crippled shoots and blooms. It works when used properly.

Hello friends ! its year three of this rose and yesr 2 of it not blooming. not a bud in sight ! i did a google search as well as asking some friends on instagram and i heard from a few peoplr it doesnt bloom well or at all for them .

im so torn on ripping it out .

maybe it needs chill i cant give ?

no midge on my rose .

what do you all think ?

Why fight with a rose that is super stingy or won't bloom at all. There are to many good yellows out there. Make it vanish and get another good blooming yellow.

    Lol @ "Ain’t No Sunshine"!!

Mine bloomed sparingly in the first year. I’m hoping for a better year this year, though at present it seems to only be putting out new growth. Perhaps it behaves like a climber and needs to have its branches wrapped around an obelisk or attached horizontally to a wall? Elestrial shows some beautiful photos of hers on an obelisk. Lots of bloom!

@Lilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca, It seems like the consensus from fb groups, is to force laterals by pegging/wrapping, like how Judi mentioned above and Elestrial mentioned in another thread.

I will be installing mine soon and would like to train it against a wall. It will get good AM sun, so can report back from zone 10a next season.

Mine sets a lot of buds, especially in the first and last flush - but I do have the canes wrapped at an angle, sometimes even completely horizontal, around an obelisk to keep her in check because her 'wild look' really irks me. Maybe that is the trick

Mine is grafted onto Huey, if that helps

I also only got one flower last year…. not a great rose for me

@Elestrial 7a and @Lilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca, I wonder if BMS’ canes were pegged downward upon the central leader, would this be enough to induce more flowers? Does it have to be twisted around itself?

I ask because I’m trying to decide whether to put a metal frame behind BMS against the wall on which to tie canes, or two obelisks spaced apart to distribute canes on either side of the plant’s center to wrap. Any thoughts?

I don't think she needs to be twisted around herself to create more flowering laterals, I would think just bending the canes at an angle should be enough. Between your two ideas: the metal frame behind her against a wall sounds better

@Elestrial 7a, Thanks so much for sharing your experience and thoughts! Hopefully, it will be as happy as your beautiful plants!
