Where is the fridge?

Frdge is built into the cabinetry (circled in red). Is this considered outdated? House is built form the 70s from a ultra modern architect. I think kitchen has been updated since then...? Confused because this natural wood is back for cabinetry, right..?

If you are happy w storage and the general function of space the first thing would be price out new counters and splash in a white or very light material. could be wonderful change. there will be cost as there is large counter areas but it might be enough to meet goals. do you have a budget? the Slab door style in original condition is best left as shown if you can work w it. ( my thought) …its not a close up view so the wear and tear isnt known.

These are timeless cabinets. I would think you can make them work.

I’d look into new countertops and backsplash. Maybe white quartz.

And change the hardware out for something more current.

Pictures from diff angle as feeds from family room. I always thought I’d do navy or dark green cabinets. But now debating to keep existing. Any advice/photos be helpful

I'd change out the hardware on the cabinets, change the electrical outlets to something other than black, and paint all of the black strips/baseboards a neutral color. Those black lines are "80s modern" to me. It's a very nice kitchen otherwise.

You have a nice large kitchen, I would simply replace the hardware on the cabinets for a contemporary style in black to match the black trim you have. Then the biggest transformation would come by replacing the countertop and backsplash for white quartz and white stacked tile backsplash. Bring some colour into to room with counter stools and a roman shade.

The slab doors really make sense with the space - no molding or trim, simple windows. They complete the look. The wood also makes sense with the views of trees outside. The only way I'd want them painted is a super shiny lacquered finish.

I'd do a very light countertop and run it up the wall as a backsplash. Remove the microwave and cabinetry between the windows. Add a real hood there instead. It will be a focal point.

Add new hardware. A simple bar.

Change the shape of the island. I'm usually not in favor of a waterfall, and am not sure if I am in here either - it depends on the size of the kitchen. But it would be one way to clad or get a second cabinet face material in here.

What does you furniture look like? Do you have any pics or your furniture or of the vibe you are going for? This all looks like seller's furniture.

Hood between windows. Take a light stone color to the ceiling.

The only thing ‘dated’ about the kitchen is the polished uba tuba type granite (it was so overused) and the raised bar (which with the new photo works pretty well). I don’t love white in this kitchen, a warm grey matte quartz seems more suited to everything else. But maybe white. No ‘marble’

What sticks out to me as "dated" (I hate that term) is the shape of the island + raised bar countertop on the peninsula. However, as HALLETT & Co has pointed out above, the raised countertop makes sense once I saw the additional photo added in a comment.

I'd also move the OTR microwave and replace with a hood as suggested by Kendrah.

I'd either do a white plain quartz or glacier white corian countertop (there are so many people on Houzz who love their white corian countertops!) - or a porcelain that has a light faux marble veining (as Kendrah has shown - although I don't know if that is real marble or porcelain - it just reminds me of some of the porcelain slabs I've seen).

With just a few changes, your kitchen will look beautiful!

If there are some scratches on your cabinets, I would use those markers to hide them. The markers work well - just be careful because any that is outside of the actual lighter scratch may leave a distinct looking mark on the cabinets. You can use rubbing alcohol (I think that's correct - just google it to double check before using it, if needed) to help blend the marker color.

I'm with Monique - this kitchen is much more classic than dated. Put in a proper vent hood, get a small countertop MW, change out the hardware, and call it a day.

Thank you everyone. Replacing cabinets with a Hood makes a huge diff! And comment about the black lines is something to think about. Would have never thought of that. Dont think white countertop is doing any justice to the cabinets - but Ill def look into other 'light' options. Also, updating the hardware was great suggestion. What about a light grey soapstone counter? Some have a hint of blue to them that could look great with your cabinets and get a touch of blue into your kitchen.

kendrah - that sounds more appealing. I do like a white countertop, but just looked so plain and drab in this space - Ill look into the one you suggested! And yes - agreed w changing the shape of island (ofcourse!)

I love these cabinets and do not consider them dated. They also seem to have a nice finish on them, so it would be a shame to lose that. I found your post because I'm looking for ways to crown contemporary slab front cabinets with an 8' ceiling. My gut says the contrasting black reveal may need to go away if you get rid of your black counter. I wonder what others might think.
