My New Golf Buddy!

I played today and this fine gentleman was watching intently from the edge of the rough. He was near the 100 yd marker when we teed off, then stayed put as I hit my next shot just 10 yards from him.

This is a Sherman's Fox Squirrel, a large species native to north Florida and south Georgia. They can weigh up to three pounds and are known for their black heads with white noses and ears. He was the cutest thing! We also saw an adolescent deer who was walking on one of the bridges over a creek, and a very fat gray and brown rabbit in addition to many different species of birds. The temperature was about 75 and the sky was gorgeously blue, a really great day, and to top it off I got my first bogey! The experienced member I played with said i had improved a lot😁

Congratulations on your improvement. Sounds like you have quite the nature preserve where you play. I've never heard of a Sherman's Fox Squirrel. Interesting creature.

He's cute! I have been introduced to fox squirrels since I came to SC but no Shermans. Nice job on the bogey. I'm happy if I get bogies though I do manage to get more pars and occasional birdies now after playing for a year straight with no winter break.

    What a cutie!

In Princeton, NJ we have black squirrels but no white noses/ears. Yours is much cuter.

Congrats on the bogey! You'll be getting pars in no time!

You are putting in the work and it is paying off - congratulations! While I am getting closer to breaking 100 (101), it still eludes me. For every hole I par, I seem to double bogey another. As soon as my drives are great, my putting goes to carp. Still love the game!

3katz -it sounds like you are making amazing progress with your game as well!

I’ve never seen a black squirrel, only gray or brown! WTG, Kswl! Days like this one are what make it all worthwhile!

I don’t like to play golf, but I love golf courses. I like looking at the wildlife and enjoying the beautifually landscaped course. DH played (I rode) Rio Mar Golf Course at the Westin in Puerto Rico. We saw a sign that said ”Iguana Crossing Ahead.” Yeah yeah, I thought. I’ve never seen a deer at a deer crossing. Well, there were 6 or 7 HUGE iguanas lumbering across the fairway!

    🦎 vs 🦌

It’s a well-known fact that iguanas have a higher literacy rate than deer 😎

Cute! I’ve never seen one of those squirrels. Congrats on your first bogey!

Such a little cutie! It’s Wild Kingdom on your golf course. 😍

What I wouldn’t want to see while golfing:

    Congrats on your bogey!

We have fox squirrels down at the beach condo in Little River, SC, don't know if they are a Sherman's though. They are black with a little white on them. Will try to get a pic of one to check out.

I’ve never heard of that species of squirrel either. A very interesting look! We did have an albino squirrel that made an occasional appearance here for about a year, then we never saw it again. I’m quite sure it stood out, making it easy prey for a hawk or other predator roaming around.

    Congrats on your golfing improvement!

Thanks everyone for the golfing encouragement ❤️ I do not anticipate ever becoming a really good golfer (and don’t necessarily aspire to that) but must admit it’s nice to be hitting the ball consistently, finally!

At our old house about 12 miles away we had black flying squirrels in our woods that looked just like monkeys. These Sherman’s Fox squirrels are much cuter with no childhood Wizard of Oz nightmare vibes 🙄

Yay for you! Your new buddy may be your new inspiration. He is adorable. Don't sell yourself short-I bet you will be making pars by the fall!

Wild life at my course are gators, bald eagles and lots of other birds species. We have lots of rabbits too, but they aren't usually out in the middle of the day. Same for the coyotes and bobcats.

I hate golf and most golf courses but dang, can I see the point of hanging out with cute critters like that.

Glad you are enjoying your game and improving. That is one of the most adorable squirrels I've ever seen. He looks like he's dressed for a formal event.

Cool! For a moment, I wondered if it was a weird skunk 😄

And I loved this Nature episode all about squirrels - they are very cool animals. I don't recall that type being mentioned, tho...

I did learn there are giant rainbow colored squirrels 🙂
