Squirrel Is Destroying Star Jasmine

last modified: 10 months ago

I have a Star Jasmine that is being eaten clean by a squirrel. Even worse, the squirrel chews into the stems at the base and severs them. This is the second plant where this has happened. I developed a very strong pepper spray and that short-term stopped the destruction, but now the leaves are turning yellow, so maybe the soap or pepper itself is toxic to the plant?

I am ready to give up on this. Can someone identify a climbing vine that will grow in the shade but still flower? If not, can we identify a beautiful yellow or variegated leaf vine that will cover the trellis and at least provide some color interest?
