mix and match stools

Hi. I need some help and guidance on how to mix and match stools around the kitchen island while still making it look cohesive. The island allows 3 primary stools in the main seating area (and we like stool with backs) and we have room to put two more seats on the side…which will need to be backless so that it can always be tucked underneath the counter when not in used.

What element should be constant and what element can I change it up.

The picture shows different stool I got to try it out but cant figure it if any will work together.

Are any of the backed stools staying, given there are two styles? If starting from scratch, just duplicate the legs’ style/feel and the seating should be in the same color family. If the stools on the end have a minimal back (see below), it will open up more options.

I think if the 2 on the ends are the same and the 3 with backs are the same there are several choices that will work. If you want a feature to be the same, choose black legs like you show or all the same wood/fabric color. I would do some Google searches. I was hoping to find a quick pic online to add here, but it's not as easy to find as I thought. I am sure Pinterest would have something.

It will never look right and look like you couldn't find enough of the ones with backs. If you are fine with that, then I would look for similar styles or better yet a company that sells the same model in a backless and with a back version.

For a more finished look, I would go with all matching backless stools that have an upholstered/cushioned seat, so they are more comfortable.

Chispa, we do like stools with back. So having all backless won’t get the approval from family. .

@Maureen, these are all just samples. I am concluding that I should match the legs also. I fortunately not easy to find and coordinate!

i’d choose the seats with backs that you want and then for the stools, I would get low key white ones that blend with the island and just have those disappear

I don’t love the high contrast black legs against the white island but that’s just a me thing

I like the adjustable stool on the right for the island and no stools on the end since there is no overhang only somebody with their legs stuffed beside the support . I have no idea why backs are such a big deal for counter stools we never lean back on our stools and we use them all the time .

You are already packing 100 lbs of seating in a 5 lb package. You really want to declutter the look, which means no black legs. It will be a tangle of black and make your black hardware feel crowded. Either white, chrome, or acrylic legs here.

Also, you have to decide which stools will tuck in because all five will not slide under and you are going to be left with stools hovering beyond the island and into the aisles. So get stools that are light weight and easily moveable. There is going to be a lot of pulling in and out here.

1. Simple white backless stools for the ends. Something like this.

2. Grey stools with chrome legs and backs for the 3 center. Chrome disappears nicely, compliments your faucet, and grey is nice with your beautiful marble backsplash.
