To cheer myself up on having to dig up an infected hosta (still awaiting test results) a few weeks ago, I went out to buy some more hostas. I went to some local places and big box stores. At Lowe's and Home Depot I found at least 1 hosta showing signs of Hosta Virus. In both situations I brought the infected plant to the check out desk and explained things, and in both circumstances they seemed very concerned and one cashier was even gracious enough to throw the plant immediately in the trash. At Home Depot they don't have the hosta cultivar on the pot and I had a hard time figuring out where it came from; at Lowe's the pot says "DJG Coucil Bluffs, IA" so after doing some google searching I'm assuming this stands for Dallas Johnson Greenhouse. So I would beware buying hostas coming from Dallas Johnson Greenhouse, or at least quarantine the plant for a few years before planting it with other hostas. I've included some photos of the diseased plant (which was thrown away).
