robust Hosta for part sun like Sum and Substance

Hi there

I am looking for a plain green or chartreuse/ yellow-green Hosta

quite big

Sum and Sustance seems to fit the bill,

is there a tetraploid sport with more robust foliage?

Slugs are not a real problem, they get aditional water

or something like a green Blue Angel, but green and as good a grower as S&S

I like Royal Standard, but then it is not that big

Don't know much about "tetraploid" but check out Crazy for You. Hosta data base lists it as med/large but I find it to be quite large.

Liberty, not as big as Wu or S&S, but can take some sun. Avoid mid afternoon sun.

Sorry, I missed the Chartreuse, Squash Casserole or World Cup but those are more on the yellow side.

I have UFO which is green and fast growing. Moving 30 miles north made tremendous difference in my garden timetable. My hostas are still unfurling.

Perhaps consider Tom Terrific or Age of Gold. These are good performers for me, but they might be too yellow for what you want.

Hi Ben, that Age of Gold looks great as well, there is a golden-leaf Catalpa in the background, so really gold-green would fit nicely

Lin, you did know that 'Sum and Substance' is a triploid... and yellow offspring such as 'Golden Piecrust' and 'Prairie Sum Shine' are also triploid of course... haven't seen a tetraploid sport as yet....

thanks, that is interesting. Funny, I started off with Hostas very slowly, then we lived in a flat with a shaded yard, and I had an intensive Hosta phase, even bought the Hosta tomb, the book by Zillis,

and I think that it was at that time that I picked up on tetraploid Hostas.

I just now did a web search to fresh up my hazy memory,

I thought that they all were extra thick-leaved and extra - everything,

after about 3 websites it seems to me that there are tetraploid plants/ cultivars, but that they vary in appearance.

then I remembered the Hosta Library,

and I looked for Patriot, as I at least thought that this one was tetraploid

I added the link, at polyploidy it says: 2-2-2, 4-4-4, and I am totally clueless what this means and could not find an explanation after searching for a bit on that site.

apart from that I didnt kknow that about Sum and Substance, I looked her up in the HLibrary as well, there are pics of so amazing specimen...

eons ago, when I got into gardening, I got to know the S&S in an allotment of a garden architekt who was very fond of it. THe name was so weird that I could remember it later when we moved into the flat with the shady yard... and of course I had to get one

long story short, I definetely will stick to the Sum and Substance, it is so amazing,

the project I use it for is interesting, mixed perennials with some young trees, now littel shade, good gardners, aaand, like in 8y plus, wen there is more shade and we improved the soil by using all the foliage and things, ....

they will be big and impressive and beautifull...

so, thank you, sometimes the process of choosing a plant is even more interesting than buying it...

I don’t know if you are interested in bi-color. Liberties grow very robustly for me in the morning sun, afternoon shade. That’s an Elegans to the right, and blue gardening scissors for scale.
