Black trim red brick

last year

We need advice.. we started painting the trim of our house black. The fiance wasn't crazy about the black from the beginning because of orange undertones in the brick but agreed. I thought it looked good. We have finally gotten to the window trim.. it doesn't look as good. The fiance wants to start over with a beige similar to what it was before. I hate the thought of backtracking - that took a lot of time and I don't think the black looks bad enough to start over. Maybe there's a way to save what we have done already.. Am I being too frugal or is he being too picky? Any guidance/advice is helpful! (We cannot paint the panels in the window, they are inside the window).

Picture is of just one window we have done. We have stopped at this point to figure out our next move.

I dont know about picky or frugal, but, I dont think the black is right for your house. I dont think the tan or beige is right either. I would have painted them all white.

The black is too stark and doesn't reference anything else on the house. Can you photo shop or use some program to virtually test dark browns, charcoals, the pipe behind the brown bin at the left of your photo?

The downspout is not trim and should be painted the same color as the house.

i like the black at the roofline but since you appear to have white vinyl windows the black trim there is too chopped up. i think you need to stick with white on the windows, any other color is going to look too split up there with the white vinyl.

Probably white is safe. The black seems harsh. Needs to complement the brick/roof if not doing white. Possibly in the direction of these samples.

Are the windows paintable? I hate white with red brick… if the windows are vinyl all white trim would be more cohesive. If they are paintable all black would be fine. A black stripe around white windows doesn’t work.

I think it looks pretty good, but, your photo has a utility meter, grungy cement, A/C equipment and a garbage can, so nothing it going to look good.

The thing that troubles me most (and believe me,there's multiple things bothering me) is your mention of frugality. There's so few sq ft of paintable surface on that house I can't see enough cost to ding a piggy bank, much less bank account.

I have two recommendations, neither of which is what color to paint your house.

    1. #1 buy a color wheel (Hobby Lobby has nice ones for reasonable price) and search the net for ways to use it. If theory clicks for you and your soon to be, you have many enjoyable projects ahead beginning with your first home.
    2. If you aren't 100% comfortable moving ahead, contact local Sherwin Williams or other paint store about free color consultation. After working with the wheel and consultant you will look forward to the next project, even if only a piece of furniture. What I'm saying is that using your own ideas instead of strangers' will make your home twice as enjoyable.

Have fun and here's wishing you all a long happy marriage.
