Curses on whatever did this! Do you have any dogs running loose in your area Lisa? It could have been squirrels digging for nuts. I once had them uproot a freshly planted Hosta. Deer if you had them would have eaten it. Do you see any tracks if not I would say a squirrel.

Definitely looks like a 4 legged critter, you see a bunny around? If you need some extra luck you could turn it into a 3 legged critter...(just kidding ;-)

Deer usually eat the top-most leaves of hostas. Your damage looks to be like from someone closer to the ground. You say no bunnies, but I believe rabbits find hostas quite delectable. Squirrels and raccoons will certainly eat them as well.

I do have deer and wondered if one tugged the eye of that hosta out of the ground.

And we have those huge jack rabbits, but only higher up in the mountains so far. I've never seen one around here yet.

But there are surprises sometimes like the turkey strolling up my street not that long ago.
