Need help with redecorating my living room.

last modified: last month

I need help with redecorating my living room. Sofa, end table, coffee table and mirror is staying. Would like ideas for curtains, throw pillows and area rug colors but all ideas welcome. Thank you!

First picture I took out middle panel.

I need a little help choosing! I'm trying to decide between these two pinch pleat curtain panels.

Left: natural sheerer pinch pleat panel

Right: thicker, higher quality fabric in white beige color

Which do you think work better? Do these colors work or should I do Ivory?

Also, I'm having such a dilemma choosing an area rug, any suggestions? Thank you

Removing the middle curtain panel was a great start. You could try to take off the valance as well (although I like the valance too). I was going to suggest having the sofas face each other until I saw the corner fireplace. I would remove the picture on the wall near the fireplace and maybe place it with the other picture on the other side of the fireplace. The candles should be removed from the mantel - you need something with height there - try your dried flower arrangement instead. A larger rug would bring it all together.

Your rug is too small for this space. I would get larger one. As for curtains...no valances please, look dated. Just panels, soft ivory, warm taupe, or dusty sage for an elegant, lighter feel. Accent Colors are sage green, muted gold, soft coral, or slate blue

Several accounts I follow have been very happy with the quality of the drapes from Two Pages. I agree the valance should be eliminated, you will be surprised how much more light you get in the room. Pillows with some pattern and texture that coordinate with the larger rug like Celery suggested would pull the look together.

Thank you all so much! I plan on ordering some panels from Twopages.

What are your thought of this rug, Loloi II Odette Collection ODT-09 Ivory/Multi Area Rug

It looks kind of peachy to me but maybe its just my screen (or are you trying to go that route)? It’s good to get the smallest size first to check out the colors in real life so it’s easier to return if you don’t like it.

I would test them both at night to see which level of privacy you like better (have someone walk around inside).

What colors do you want in the rug, size and price range would help too.

I think the green previously suggested is a good way to go.

I would flip the mirror and add sonces to the wall. The room needs more texture.

A much larger rug is required for this room. All the front feet of the seating should be on top of the rug.

I like Beverly’s green rug suggestions better. They make more of a statement than the first one.

Thank you all so much for the great ideas, I love them! I'm especially loving the sage green suggestion. I think I might try ordering a panel of sage sheers since none of the linen/beige ones I've tried are working, they feel too dull and boring. Also I absolutely love the green rug with the black border. If anyone has suggestions on where to find similar rugs or where to look, I'd appreciate it. I haven't been able to find anything close.

Here are some options using Celery’s picture with the sage curtains.

Thank you for all the images! I found these sconces that I had for years and never put up. I put it in place of where the hook where the mirror was hung on, but just for show, I can't put the mirror back because it’s very heavy

. So just to get a visualization of what this sconce would look like once I place the mirror back up. Do you like it? Is it too outdated?

I'm not sure which rug you are asking about, the first one of Beverly's? Using google, that looks to be part of the Safavieh Heritage collection. That one I think is the Steward and it is brown, not black. IMO the rugs with contrast to the furniture really liven up the room.

I love the idea of the gold sconces, so pretty! I also checked out the Safavieh Heritage rug from Rugsdirect.com. I'm a little bummed because it's blue, not green like it looked in the photo that was posted. Where are all the other rugs from? Thank you again!

Beverly what is the name of this rug as I searched on Rugsdirect.com website and I couldn't find it. Thank you!

What about changing the wall color? Something not so similar to the sofa?

I’ve been having a tough time selecting the right area rug for this room. I decided to keep my existing curtains I changed and raised the rod, added curtain rings, and extended the length to give them a more modern look. I ordered 4 rugs, they all ended up being either too bold or too busy

. I’d really appreciate any suggestions or recommendations for something that would work better. Thank you so much!

I would have liked to paint but I am having family visiting next week.

To me, that rug is not that much different from the one you have. What is the difference-is it larger?

I really liked the mockups with the rugs that had a bit of contrast from your furniture. Are the drapes blue?

Hi Kcooz07, My curtains are burgandy and gold. Which rug from the mockup are you suggesting as so many have been posted Thank you!

Thank you! Do you think this rug would go?

On leather furniture, feather/ downfilled cushions look better than the stiffness of foam/ fibrefilled cushions.

Like what you did with the drapes! I also like the $150 rug, but it's only 6'2" wide and it looks like you need at least an 8x10. Here are a couple with touches of the red. I also moved the mirror to hang vertically over the fireplace (don't know if that's possible; maybe it could lean on the mantel of the angled fireplace?), substituted art over the sofa, and changed the lamp to one less formal. (Eventually might look for a less formal coffee table as well to relate to the more casual leather sofas.)

Thank you for liking my drapes! I also really like the rug choices you suggested. Could you please let me know the brand or make of the rugs you used in the mockup? Also, the mirror is too large to go above the fireplace but I like what you did with the artwork about the couch.

Both rugs are from rugsdirect.com. The first is Antiquity AT-822 in the brown/beige color. The second is Anatolia AN-512 in ivory/rust. I can't see the color of the drapes very well in the photo, and colors are not necessarily accurate on screens anyway, so the reds in these rugs might be too orange. You might be able to find better. I liked the way the dominant colors in these compliment the wall and sofa colors, with just a bit of the red to tie in the drapes and sofa pillows. Those with more of the red seemed too strong to my eyes, competing too much with the drapes.

Incidentally, a good suggestion that others have made is to order the smallest size as samples to check the color and quality, then return those samples and order the size you actually need.

Hi Simplynatural, I happen to have the Antiquity rug in a small size and put it up against my drapes , (see picture) In sunlight my drapes look rust but when sun isn’t hitting them they look burgandy . What do you think of the rug against drapes Do you think its too much?

It looks like the reds work well together in the photo above. This rug is Antiquity AT-14, though, different from the Antiquity AT-822 in my post. Here are both rugs in the room so you can see what you think about the amount of red:

And here they are again with a rather clumsy attempt at a truer color for the drapes:

I think you will have to judge color balance in person!

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me. I think I'm liking the warm beige area rug over the red/rust one.

Hi, I promise this is the last time I’ll ask! 😊 I recently ordered two rugs in a 3x5 (see photos) Also I attached a picture of my actual livingroom Can you please let me know which of these two rugs you think can work in my space? I’d really appreciate your opinions Thank you so much for your time!

Safavieh Antiquity 822 brown/ beige and Safavieh Antoquity A21 rust/gold

Here are the AT-21 and AT-822 in the latest room photo (with no other changes):

Both are shown in the 8'3"x11' size (if the visualizer has scaled them correctly to the photo). I'd still vote for the 822, but see what you think.

I like the more neutral rug.
