How do I clean an old Syrian storage vessel?

We bought a 100 year old Syrian / Turkish storage vessel which id quite strong smelling inside. Is there a way to clean it safely to get rid of the smell?
The outside is also quite flaky due to age. Do we have to treat it to preserve it or leave it as is? Thanks in advance

What will you use it for? Will it be inside the house? If so and you are just using it decoratively inside, I'd fill it with charcoal briquets, or other charcoal marketed to absorb odors. Put a cover on the top and the smells should dissipate.
