Wall niche style help!

last year

We bought this house relatively recently and I can’t figure out how to use or style these wall niches.
We added the wood base to tie it in with the rest of the house decor (we built inset shelves into one wall with the same wood base and added it to the stair railings as well) but beyond that I’m at a total loss.
The larger one is about 20” wide and 10” deep and faces the living room windows so is decent for plants but if still like to style it a little nicer.
The smaller one is about 14” wide and 8” deep and is tucked away so just ends up collecting junk.

Our style is pretty simple and modern (with a sprinkle of mismatched brightly colored toys everywhere because - toddlers).
Open to any suggestions. Endless searches for ideas and inspiration online have failed me as I have yet to come across anything similarly shaped.

    Lose it!!!

    Studs and drywall!

Gone in a weekend! The niche police will not come Make a welcome or just larger art!

Put a console on the wall under art! Add a lamp!

You don’t need it. :) just because it happens to be someon’s bad idea.

Agree 100% with Jan. Drywall and studs. These niches are mistakes.

I almost always just close them up with a drywall patch then hang some art or do whatever you want to do on a nice flat wall.

I appreciate the input - and while I agree that closing them up would be ideal we just don't have the time at the moment for a project like that.

If anyone has any brilliant styling ideas to tide me over I'm open to them. This is not my forte.

At this point I'm thinking I may just splurge on a statement plant pot for the big one to give it a facelift and put a smaller little shelf higher up in the smaller one and just use it as a decorative display shelf.

    Its a handy man project!!

Why does it need to be ” right now”?

    A statement plant ? Real ?

    Faux?

Youd be btter off with a measure- go to a Home Sense and hang a substantial

piece of ”art” and obliterate it!

Who cares there is air behind it

Statement plant “pot” as in a nice big decorative pot.
Doesn’t need to be right now - hence the appreciation for the ideas and input to close it off but I am looking for a “right now” decorative solution.
We also have little kids so having space for plants off the floor is appreciated “right now”.

I’m married to quite a handy man and am handy myself so I’m sure we’ll get around to doing something with it eventually.

I do like the idea of hanging a piece of art or a mirror in front of it and a small console table below.

Art Glass in a lighted niche is a good solution.

If you are very selective you might be able to find art glass even at placeds like HomeGoods

Unfortunately we don’t have any homesense type stores where I live but I will be checking thrift shops and garage sales

Don’t rush to fill it. Like you said, it’s garage sale time in America. Have fun looking for the right piece for this nook.

As a glass artist I love the idea of a large piece there. As a mom and grandma it's not my first choice with toddlers. Some 1980s builder was thinking it was a cool inset entry table. How about a large acrylic ( not glass) cylinder and you can fill it with those multi colored toys or make it a Betta fishbowl LOL. Seriously some tall light weight vessel and bamboo or branches to make it kid proof.

I think @kathleen MK made the most important comment. When you have toddlers, anything “precious” should be stored in the attic or garage. I amend my comment to agree with her. 😂
