Which paint finish for ceiling AND walls?

I have a lake cottage from the 1960s with a cathedral ceiling in the living/dining area. I want to paint the whole room white, so what finish do I use? Flat ceiling paint and eggshell wall paint? One paint for the whole job? Which finish?

Flat for ceiling, egshell or matte for walls, and satin or semi gloss for trim.

if you want to save time and $, paint everything the same color, egg shell finish.

it's enough to clean and won't create any glare from lighting.

You were right the right time. Flat for the ceiling and eggshell for the walls,......if you every expect to be able to wash the wall around a light switch. You cannot do that with matte flat walls.

USE CEILING PAINT FOR THE CEILING. It comes premixed. It is formulated to minimize imperfections like joints and nail pops in a ceiling.

    Thank you!!
Can I have ceiling paint mixed to match the wall paint?

I haven't used eggshell since Benjamin Moore came out with their Aura matte line. No real shine, cleans up pretty well and touches up well.

I use the same color for walls and ceiling. I get BM Regal Select eggshell for the walls, flat for ceilings and satin for trim. Trim is a different color - when I have done white walls, ceiling and trim I used the same color on all three, just let the gloss levels do the work.

I'd do the entire space in a cleanable flat. There are some great flats out there now that are as cleanable as eggshell.

I vote for flat finish for entire space. We went this way and I am still able to clean spots with white melamine sponge

Never ever flat or matte for walls! You will see every scuff, and they don't clean easily! Even the smallest sheen (egg shell) allows you sooo much more ability to clean up messes.

I use eggshell, but I am 63 and a bit stuck in my ways. When I was younger you needed to get eggshell. I remember living in apartments where they used inexpensive flat paint. You would wipe the wall with a dark rag and your rag was covered with a layer of white paint.

Back in the day they didn't have matte as an option, it was either flat or eggshell.

I am not sure that matte wouldn't work as well or better than the eggshell finishes from 30 years ago.

It seems that many here have not painted, or lived with, the better quality matte paints that have come out in the last 15 years ...

We’ve lived in three homes and I painted pretty much every room (some rooms twice); over time I always opted for Benjamin Moore due its great coverage and durability. Used Eggshell the majority of the time on walls and Flat on ceiling.

I just use the same actual paint for both and in a matte finish

    @Chispa - Exactly what I was saying.

I stuck with what I know works, but I did test different finishes when I selected eggshell for my current home.

I am not sure there is a single "Best" answer. I believe that the amount of natural daylight should be considered.

My current home is in Central PA where we have a lot of cloudy days and I have large trees that shade my home. It will never be a sundrenched home.

Eggshell appears so much more matte in this home than in my last home which was in suburban San Diego. I had no trees and large windows and every day was sunny.

If I were painting the San Diego home again I would go with a matte finish. In my current home matte fell flat and the eggshell finish worked better.
