I had them for a while, but the site was not really to their liking, too sunny and dry, I transplanted them, the roots were quite thick and fleshy, I used a very sharp spade and tried not to damage the crown/ buds on top, they sprouted in the next season but petered out.

I would divide very big clumps very carefully, rather cutting then tearing,

I checked briefly in the www, there were several solid sources describing transplanting or dividing bleeding heart

or you wait till next spring, some plants do better if divided/moved when active in growth

Um, I would probably wait till autumn. Plants which bloom before midsummer always do better with autumn treatments (transplanting/dividing) while later flowering plants such as symphiotrichum, as a general rule of thumb, do much better with spring maintenance as autumn transplantings really do not allow them to put on sufficient root growth. Have followed this general rule forever (since losing some beloved asters, attempting an autumn move).
