Building a Home Porches & Decks

New construction – Deck ceiling material

last year

Hello,

We just broke ground on our new house on the west coast of Florida. We will have an 1100 square-foot covered, screened deck off the back and side of our house.

The floor of the deck will be tile.

We will have recessed, lights and ceiling fans.

We are considering our options for the deck ceiling material. The options we have seen so far include painted pine tongue and groove, cypress, wood-look aluminum, vinyl, and PVC such as VERSATEX.

We would like a material that looks good and yet, is low maintenance. We have a tough environment with the salt air.

Thank you for any recommendations!

Built a custom home in SW FL during 2021. Our builder suggested stained cypress. It looks just like it did when it was installed 3.5 years ago. We are about half mile from the intracoastal, so our exposure to salt water spray is only during hurricanes. We used it for our front porch and lanai. I matched the stain to the color of my engineered wood floors.

Hi Chispa,

Thank you. We had stained cypress tongue and groove on the laniai of our house we just tore down to build this house. It was beautiful.

About once a year, my husband would apply a coat of teak oil to keep it looking new.

Thanks again, Sarah
