No problem with that. Just be mindful about which of the 1,000 shades of white to use so it doesn't end up too sterile or too yellow.

White is so easy to decorate around and given it’s her first home, will make it much easier to coordinate. She should look at different undertones and test everywhere, as the natural light will have different effects. I painted our kitchen, living room and hallway white, but it didn't work in the master and I opted for a warmer shade.

There is a lot of help on line and when she compares chips at the store, narrowing will be easier. It’s a big commitment and the more upfront comparing, the better.

We painted our rooms white with an LRV of 86, white but a soft white not a stark white. Also we did the color wash with the ceiling and trim the same color as the walls..a very nice effect as shown in the first photo.

In that case, make sure the white she chooses, goes with the cabinets. Not all whites like each other.

All white is a perfect backdrop for whatever else she would like to do in the future. She can select colors in rugs, curtains, wall decor and upholstery. It's literally a blank canvas and is not a trend--it's been done forever.

When we built our vacation home, the builder said that if the painter had to clean his brush for a different color, that would be an upcharge. So we went with all white, walls and all trim, and never regretted it. All our bathroom fixtures and tiles are white as well. It's probably the most flexible color you can use in a home.

Seriously? An upcharge for cleaning the paint brush? Paint brushes are cheap. Last room I had painted cost $1,000. You'd get an upcharge for a new paint brush which is under $10?

Sigrid, the point was that if we wanted a variety of colors it would take more time and effort, and thus more money. "Cleaning the paintbrush" was a metaphor for that.

What is the point of having your own place if you cannot paint it in the color(s) that you like? Maybe I would be a bit concerned if she wanted to paint all the walls in the place grey. But white? I mean... there was a time when white/antique white was a pretty standard color used throughout, in many residences. And lately, it has been very popular as a go to - versus the faded grey from top to bottom fad. But in any case, white walls are not new.

I think the main point here, though, is that this is your daughter’s place.

But lots of times children moving into their first place ask their parents' opinions on lots of things, because they are inexperienced. I know mine did. Once they move in and feel confident, they make their own decisions. But mine still ask for my advice on some things.

I thank God that I never had these types of issues with parents. My very first apartment was in Los Angeles, CA and I grew up in NYC. My parents were at the house in NYC, and there were never any conversations about how I was decorating my places in LA. In my life, it would have been totally bizarre for my parents to have done that. When I moved back to NYC and got a place, my Mom offered to make the curtains for me, for LR and bedroom. I went to the NYC fabric district and bought ivory antique satin and some navy colored lace. I wanted antique satin drapes, and also pillow shams for the bed with antique satin on both sides covered by the navy blue lace on one side. My Mom made all of it, but she didn't choose any of it. I remember her looking at me and saying, “You have good taste.“ And that meant a lot to me, because both of my parents had fine taste.

We used the most popular white which was Kelly Moore Swiss Coffee 23 and very nice but no longer available. Have the paint store match the fomula. Good in bright rooms or rooms with low natural light.

My favorite white is Ben Moore White Dove. But it really depends on your house, your lighting and your preference.

I agree her place her choice and not a bad one but whites can be tricky so maybe if you really want help lets see her furnishings since that will have an effect on wall color .

Just did the same thing with a house - all white. Sherwin Williams Cheviot was the color of choice for everything including moulding. It worked out beautifully. The color has warmth without being overbearing.

I have a friend who has painted every house she has owned (on #3) BM White Dove top to bottom. Not something I would ever do, but it works for her. Your daughter just needs to find a white that goes with the kitchen cabinets (or take a cabinet door to a paint store to be custom matched). Without window treatments and artwork all white will be uninteresting, so it may take her a while to get everything the way she wants it, but I think it's easier if you're a first time homeowner to go slowly. She can always decide to paint some rooms different colors later if that seems right after she buys furnishings. Painting all white to start will make the home feel clean and fresh.
