Daylilies continue to bloom

Days are now over 95 as a rule (the heat index is well into the triple digits) and the daylilies continue to bloom. We are thrilled when a cloud is predicted to pass overhead. Here's a few that have to face the heat and the ever bight sun.

This daylily is proving to be sunfast regardless of heat. It faces almost full day sun here and looks great. Has now become one of my favorites:

Green Icon

I've had this one for years and it's always had short scapes. This year they almost doubled in size. Nothing for people who like tall daylilies to write home about, but an improvement to me. The large bloom in that hot orange really wakes one up in the morning.

No Way Jose:

This is a much quieter and refined daylily which I grow because I still like fancy yellow edges on pink daylilies.

Sweet Summer Secret:

This next one is one of my original daylilies from back in the olden days when I bought a few from Wayside Gardens. It's one of the few I have in the ground. It does lighten during the day, but in a pleasing way to my eye.

Wayside Guppy Gums:

I'm including this late in the day picture of Wayside Guppy Gums so Brad can see how I get a lavender. Brad achieves his from hard work, I let the sun make mine. I think its kind of pretty:

This next one is a new to bloom for me this year. I bought this because the name was clever and it was a "U". I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. The color changes as the heat increases, but it still keeps a unique look. Lots of multiple blooms. Still blooming as I type this:

I might sound like a broken record, but I like Green Icon and No Way Jose too. The color change on Wayside Guppy Gums is amazing. It fades to an attractive color.

I really like GREEN ICON. I can see how this one is one of your favorites. I prefer the lavender late in the day picture of WAYSIDE GUPPY GUMS.

I really like Green Icon too, so simple, but unique. I don't always care for doubles, and not much for orange, but No Way Joseph looks great.

I love Green Icon next to those pink impaitiens! Umber Ella is eye catching. It's interesting how pretty Guppy Gums is after it lightens!

Maryl, you got Green Icon!!! I’m so glad. I love mine although it is not multiplying as fast as I would like. Of course that does not bother you and I think you will continue to like it. No Way Jose is always bright and colorful. I see why you keep it. Umber Ella-love the name!

I have two favorites today, No Way Jose and Green Icon. I find it VERY interesting that Green Icon is a favorite of yours. You praise those classic shapes and ruffles so much. Looks like everything is subject to change😉

I do like Wayside Guppy Gums. I assume it was purple earlier in the day? Green Icon is pretty!

These are very nice blooms, Maryl. I also like the Umber Ella name. Green Icon is a beauty and No Way Jose is a nice orange.

Nan: I think everyone knows how important sunfast/colorfast daylilies are to me, but that doesn't mean if something evolves over the day to another pretty color that I'd not like it. I've seen a few of the daylilies called color changers, but so far haven't seen anything that sends me...........Brad: Glad you saw my lavender. The daylily right above it is what it looked like about 2PM, and then it started to fade as the day wore on to what the bottom picture shows. I have a twofer with Guppy Gums....Kay: I know you appreciate a hot orange yourself...........Sherry: I think out of my whole collection I have maybe 4 that aren't round faces. If the petals are symmetrically placed, and have enough substance to keep them stiff then I might (just might) try one. It all started with Rudy and then Rudy's Sister...........Kate: Adding to Green Icon's allure for me is that not only is it sun tolerant, but it overwintered outside last winter in its pot without damage. Hooray for Green Icon........Debra: Those are Vincas not Impatiens. Impatiens don't like me - never have. Some bug or disease always gets to them. Someone gave me a hanging basket of them this spring and already they are starting to looking kind of piquey. Umber Ella surprised me too - Will see what it does next year. It sure has bloomed to beat the band this year..........Nancy: It's always nice to hear someone who usually doesn't like something admire one of yours. I too have concerns about the plant vigor of Green Icon, but agree that it is very sunfast. Has also thrown some polys.

Thanks for taking a look Julia. Umber Ella is at the very least a name that sticks with me..........Mantis: Kate has it right. I'm not interested in overly vigorous daylilies, and so far Green Icon seems to be doing fine holding its own in the pot. It's in the "heck spot" of my mixed border with all sorts of other heat loving plants. A spot where few daylilies have ever cut it. So for my purposes it's beyond remarkable..........I'll be looking out for polys. That would be interesting...........Maryl
