To clarify, this is just a bit of unused space off the family room - not something we use every day. So I'm just using a few family pieces to fill it.

I would tighten up the furniture arrangement. I would find rugs that compliment each other to create designated areas. What is the sitting area with the vintage furniture used for? conversation?

have you tried that clock unit on the end of the fireplace wall? Something tall.

Do you have two hutches? Do you use the desk, as a desk? where is the chair?

you need a couple other chairs in the TV area. Face the sofa to the TV and add swivel chairs so you can enjoy the fireplace, too.

I'm sorry you were impacted by Hurricane Helene. You did a nice job rehabilitating your space. Since you saved your heirlooms, use them where you can. But since they're "heavy" keep the rest of your furnishings simple. Add long white airy drapes to the windows hung ceiling to floor.

Your Dilemma may seem to be about style, but it's really about how to lay out the space and use it. Some suggestions:

--Create a cozy conversational grouping with the patterned loveseat against the wall and the two chairs facing the loveseat.. Have a someone cut down your round table and put it in the middle as a small coffee table . (This kind of DIY is a good way to use cherished pieces but making them useful.) Anchor these pieces on a rug.

--Push the dining table farther away from the kitchen towards the entryway so you get this inviting feeling as you enter the space. If there's room for the desk/turned/buffet, it can go against the wall. Turn the desk into a buffet with two modern buffet lamps and a beautiful mirror or art work over it. (Relocate family photos to family room area.)

--Move the secretary to the fireplace wall facing the entry and do something inviting like this--first thing someone sees when they come in!

Style:

--Get hardboard cork mats for your dining table instead of a tablecloth, which you can save for company.

--Get white short slipcovers for your dining chairs.

Just adding some of Monet's gardens in pink and green, if available through museums and art sites. Don't shy away from large prints to make an impact. Any abstrat landscape in greens and pinks would "modernize" your settee or dining area. But pick images you love. These are just suggested palettes.

Any chance we could see a dimensioned floor plan? A rough sketch will do. Indicate where all the doors lead, so we can see how traffic should flow.

And do you need an office space in addition to sitting/dining/kitchen/TV spaces? (Asking because I see the handsome desk!)

I agree that the furniture layout seems unusual and feels empty perhaps because you haven't finished your decor since you've just renovated? A floor plan would definitely help to visualize the entire space.

Ideas:

Moved the tall wood piece with the clock to the end of the fireplace, facing the entrance, as others have suggested, and left the secretary by the window. Added a rug to ground the sitting area; moved the heirloom chairs and round table to flank the pushed-back settee; added art, a bench, another chair, a floor lamp, and a coffee table; pulled in the small tables currently flanking the entry doors to serve the new chair and the rocker. Angling those seating pieces into this area and adding a tree helps separate the sitting and TV areas. Mixing in some contemporary elements (art, floor lamp, coffee tables) updates the feel of the space.

The glass lamp is too tall for the round table, but I've used it here with a new, lowered shade (don't know whether that's possible, or whether it would reduce the height enough even if it is).

You have interesting and meaningful pieces; it will be a wonderfully personalized space.
