To wallpaper or not

last modified: 6 months ago

I am looking for some advice regarding the decision to wallpaper or not in this dining room. We are currently under extensive renovations, so please excuse the mess. I am looking to keep the rug and table and chairs. The adjacent kitchen that is very visable from this room will have BM White Dove perimeter cabniets and BM Crownsville Gray accent coffee bar, and built in china cabinet in the dining room. I painted a chunk of drywall this colour for perspective. My question is whether or not the room would benefit from some wallpaper or if would look too busy with the rug. There is an oak plate rail molding that will go back up, separating the cove ceiling from the wall.

The wallpaper that I was thinking William Morris Pure Thistle, Linen. Any advise would be appreciated.

Our suggestion would not to do wallpaper as it would compete with your rug.

I am wondering if in the picture it looks more grey. It actually looks green in person. We were trying to choose a mossy green that could work with the green stain glass.

I’m on team paint. I’d rather see art on the walls. Love the stained glass windows. I’m guessing you’re in a bungalow.

Thank you! It looks like we should go with the paint. I would love to hear some suggestions for paint colours. Nope, not bungalow!

Agreed. Don’t wallpaper in that space

I’m torn - love the airiness of the room with paint, as it lets the special windows and trim shine - but agree with @Diana Bier Interiors, LLC that the right paper could make the room really special.

maybe one question: Do you want this room to seem part of adjacent spaces and flow from there (which makes me lean paint) or do you want it to be more set apart and special (which makes me think wallpaper)?

    it’s a gorgeous room! ✨

You home looks to be late 1800's/early 1900's and, as such, wallpaper would be appropriate. However, with the curves in the room I'm not sure wallpaper would be your best options. Also, you would have to have a transition somewhere between your dining room and kitchen/other rooms. So, will join the chorus advising you to paint.

I like wallpaper in traditional spaces but IMO not this one . I love how it looks right now except for the wall color .I am not sure green is the right choice maybe try a color from the rug, DRs can be quite dramatic and dark walls can give a touch of elegance ,I think becuse dapes are not really a choice the dark wall color can be very effective in giving that feel.

Lots to think about. I agree about the wall colour. It is not right. I am still trying to finalize kitchen cabinet colours, so I am now wondering where I should go with that. There will be a cabinet in this dining room in whatever colour I ultimately go with on the wall behind the table. I also like The BM dark olive. I think it looks quite pretty with the brass hardware. Although it doesnt precisely match a colour in the rug, it seems to make the navy pop. See the picture. I also love those green wallpapers suggested from Morris, so before deciding, I have ordered a few samples to have a look.

YES wallpaper, but not the paper posted.

LOVE the rug and windows, even the furniture, but the paper is too subtle for this space.

BM Crownsville Gray (your base color in the kitchen is pretty), why not do a complimentary color like BM Hampshire Gray or BM Cromwell Gray in the dining room?

the BM Dark Olive is so dark, although a great color, too green with the gray you have chosen for the kitchen accent.

Is the dining room rug maroon and navy?

You can try the wallpaper out on this site.

I would replace the rug with something that doesn't compete with the wallpaper.

Your rug is really beautiful! I'd skip the wallpaper and go with paint instead, but try to go with a light color; it would suit the space much better and would go well with the rug, the doors, and the flooring. Dark colors might make the space feel smaller and dimmer.

Sorry but I didn't notice the cove ceiling, which would make it difficult to figure out where to end the wallpaper. If you really want wallpaper (which I've already advocated), then you could add a trim piece part way up the wall, perhaps between the top of the large windows and the bottom of the small ones. Get a piece of oak and stain it to match the existing trim. You'll also have the same issue if you decide to paint.

I also like your idea of the dark olive paint. You don't HAVE to pick a color from the rug. Just look at some of the English country houses--the colors don't all match but it works. A dark moody dining room is the perfect spot for evening dinner parties--it adds to the ambiance.

So the rug colours are rust, blue, navy and alot of brown. There is a hallway that is also visible from the room with terra cotta tiles that I won’t be replacing any time soon. The colours of the rug actually tie it together a bit, so that is why I would like to keep the rug. Yes, there are cove ceilings, but there is a wood moulding that has not been reattached yet, as the plasterer needed it off to fix the ceilings. It serves to separate the wall from the ceiling. I am sharing a photo of the living room celiling to show. I am not committed to green, and to be honest, I have never really leaned in to green before. (just purchased this house recently). There is just a lot of green stained glass throughout the house that I am trying to somehow work with. It is a lovely old house built in 1910 that needs some love. The wood trim, doors, and pocket doors are in nice shape and I would like to avoid painting them if possible. The kitchen is in the design stages, so colours of cabinetry have not been set in stone, yet. I initially thought dove white because I am a bit of a chicken when it comes to bold choices in the kitchen. I thought the Crownsville Gray for the accents might work with the green glass accent and the brown tones in the rug in the adjacent dining room. I am also still consudering the Dark Olive for the cabinet accents also. That being said, I love the suggestions and I appreciate and colour advice. I do struggle with this.

Oh my goodness, so it's a non-problem since you already have the trim to separate the wall from the cove ceiling.

If you're not fond of green, there are other colors that would work in your lovely historic home.

That paper looks beautiful! Do you know the name of it by chance? Is it a William Morris also?

I think wallpaper makes a dining area moody and inviting. I love the ones posted by Diana and HIWE. If you aren’t sure, use those wallpapers in your powder room or bathrooms.

Olive green cabinets in a 1910 house works. You can absolutely do a neutral ivory but research the colors that are of the era. Can we see the kitchen? Is it visible from the dining room? Having them complement each other is a good idea but don’t get concerned about every room matching the next.

    mcfaddenmichelle thanked BeverlyFLADeziner
  • 6 months ago

I support the wallpaper idea, but I suggest paying attention to the red color. Naturally, it is important to choose the right shade and print. By the way, glossy red paint should also work great.

For a closer connection with the carpet and stained glass, it will be enough to select paintings and decor in the desired shades.

Also note - I darkened the wall on the stairs. In the photo it is anthracite now, but other colors are possible, but I think dark ones are also better.

And of course I can't help but say that your room is beautiful! Try to experiment and be bolder. Good luck!

Can the table be turned in other direction?

The table can turned the other way, but with the kitchen renovation, we will have less room to move around the table. we have taken out a large chunk of the wall that seperates the kitchen and dining room. The new island will almost go to where the the

wall has vome out. The cabinet that is in the dining room will be where the beverage station will be. I will try and attach the kitchen design image.

This china cabinet and beverage station will actually be in the dining room. The breakfast nook, cabinet, island, and china cabinet were going to be in the accent colour. This is where the Dark Olive or Crownsville Gray comes in. I am open to colour ideas.

I would give it a try it just looks awkward with rug in front of that side wall..it should be within that designated area…if you ever buy new DR table I would go round.

I think if you use a bold wallpaper like Diana and Beverly have shown, you should use a darker color on the ceiling, so it disappears, instead of being in stark contrast to the walls. You have enough natural light in the room to pull it off.

I can certainly turn the rug and the table. It fit both ways and we initially had it going the other direction. The light fixture is centred either way. I agree; a round table would have probably worked the best. I am taking a picture of the tranitional (entrance area space). I was asked for living room, but I am wondering if this is the space that was being referred to. The house essentially requires a complete renovation. No painting has been completed. Walls and some of the ceilings look like swiss cheese from the electricians needing to remove all of the knob and tube wiring. There is a living room (full of boxes) that is the other side of the entrance (transitional space) through the pocket doors, then a library that tucked off the side of the living room that is in the touret. It is currently tough to get at for pictures as we are using it to stuff most of our belongings from the move while renovating. It is chaos here to say the least.

Beautiful house, beautiful space. You can see it even through the boxes.

I will strongly advise you to make decisions on finishing materials and color in a comprehensive manner for all rooms. That is, to develop a general concept and logic by which the choice will be made.

I would also advise you to choose and consult a decorator. It would be a shame not to get the maximum potential from such a house.

One of the most beautiful homes I've seen on Houzz! You have a gem, and I agree with Tachch that you need to have a comprehensive plan for the entire downstairs. If you can retain the services of a decorator that has a love for old homes, that would be a bonus.

Wow. The house is stunning! An olive green kitchen would work well with all the Craftsman features. And as HIWE suggested, keep looking at wallpapers, and have it ready to go. (The last one she posted would be dramatic.)
