Exterior Paint Suggestions

My daughter and son-in-law recently purchased an 80ish year old house in the Candler Park area of Atlanta and are searching for ideas/recommendatins for paint colors for the exterior (they dont want to paint the brick). The current blue and maroon colors just aren’t their taste.

They’re also considering stripoing and staining the door. Any suggestions are appreciated! Thank you!

Always best for the homeowner to ask and respond themselves.

Looks like a lot of future projects, starting with the roof, but initially, Unifying the color would be a first step.

Most colors complement red brick, the white windows are a clean accent.

I am wondering if painting the front door would be the quickest and most satisfying option. Depends on whether you want to go light or dark.

Cream and sage green. If they want to match new houses' styles, have them do a google drive through some neighborhoods with new red brick houses.

A gray/green can work nicely with the brick.

If the house doesn't need a paint job, just painting the trim white or cream and getting rid of the yellow on the door would go a long way. I like slate blue with brick, but a lighter color than they have now.

Sigrid's suggestion is perfect for an easy change. Then paint the front door the same blue as the gable siding. Maybe leftover paint in the garage to get a match at the paint store with fresh blue paint.

It depends on the look they want, but be sure the trim is coordinated, complements the shingles and ties in the stipped wood door if they go that route. (Ignore window box/shutters below.)

Such a great house - for now I would probably just paint the blue and the yellow out to a deep cream color to simplify & freshen

I love driving around and looking at houses. When I needed to update my exterior I found a home that had the same color stucco as my home and had trim and accent colors that I really liked. Knocked on their door and they knew the colors they had used and gave me the brand and name.

I now have a pink brick home and love the red accents and cream trim.

For your color brick and the style of the home I like soft blues and greens for the accent and cream trim.

But there are a lot of options that will work better than the overly saturated primary colors that were originally used.

I prefer a creamier white vs stark white trim , but love the siding color and the door color with the brick.

This is a very traditional look with an off white - light beige and black. Darker grays, not quite black may be better on your home - not as formal.

In between creamy white - not bright white - not neutral light beige with a gray green or gray green blue are my sweet spot.

I also really love this more modern color scheme with light and very dark taupe colors (see that bit of purple undertone) Interesting and unexpected.

This blue/gray/green would look great with your brick and current red trim. It's similar to what's there but the yellow door and scraggly landscaping don't do the house justice.

I would change all the blue to a color that is very close to the grout lines in the brick. The blue is not a good color for that house. Once all that blue is painted out, then, it will be much easier to find a good color for the door. Its a cute house.

Thank you one and all for your wonderful suggestions. I realize it was an unusual request coming from ”mom”, but these two excited adults are trying to get settled and doing all the necessary thimgs you have to do when moving from one state to another! I told them how awesome this site is for suggestions and they asked that I take a picture, send it in, and see what magic comes back! They will both be so excited when i share all these suggestions!

Some moms/mother-in-laws are interfering, and overbearing, but many young couples welcome and treasure their help. My niece and her husband had their moms view homes for them when they moved from California to New Jersey. They couldn't fly in on short notice and houses were moving fast. The two moms picked their home and they bought their home without seeing it till closing.

Green is opposite on the color wheel to red/orange - always a good choice to pair with red/orange brick. Sage green or army green would be worth looking at. The door should be a different color than trim - if trim is green, door would look good in natural wood after stripping paint off. But 8 oz tiny jars of paint available at Home Depot and paint scrap boards or cardboard and hold up to the house and see how well it blends or contrasts. Avoid blacks & greys. Avoid white too as it will be the focal point and better if the brick is the focal point.

Existing colors of maroon and blue are Wrong, every which way, wrong.

The new paint scheme will be best to be void of white.

Sage green is a good option, possibly with a deeper shade of green as accent color. Maybe the door, black (if not stripped to natural wood).

If they want the house to stand apart, use an accent color to paint just the window "sashes" (frame holding the glass), Not cream. The trim can be cream, but not the sashes.

Also need to consider the color choice for the porch roof Ceiling. I think I'd opt for the darker green accent color. Do Not paint it cream.

Exciting project for them - best wishes!

    Cute house!
    No Semi Gloss anywhere!!!
Since the house is asymmetrical, use 1 darker color in off black (like SW Urbane Bronze) on all trim, fascia, windows (to unify).
Front Door: Strip and use a dark stain (no red in the stain and more of a blackish tint - I've used a half black and brown mix and it adds character and depth while still seeing some wood grain).
Landscape also makes a big difference!
Antique brushed gold (warmth but not shiny or brassy) for door hardware.
    Matte black for lighting finish.

Emphatically disagree with Kinsman saying No Semi Gloss. Especially on the exterior, semi gloss is good because it resists holding dirt better than flat paint.
