I'm not sure from your description exactly how the garage is going to relate to the house. As Norwood Architects said, this can either improve the appearance of your house or not. And as millworkman said, the garage will be on a slab, but your house appears to have a basement, so how are they going to tie together? I know no one wants to spend any more money than they have to, but you could really benefit from architectural help to make this an improvement instead of an unattractive, dysfunctional waste of money. Building contractors are not generally known for their design abilities. If you tell them to put a garage "here", they will do it, no matter how it looks. Where is the lot line relative to that side of the house? Most areas would require permits for this type of construction, so make sure your plans are code compliant.

I like the siding you have on the house right now. Not a fan of board and batten siding.

I agree with cat_ky, no to the board & baton. Of course the garage will need to tie in so the elevation of the house & garage together should be considered.

Before doing anything to the siding I would definitely plan how you'll be attaching an L-shape garage to the house and how you'll deal with the existing roof line. Do you have a plan to show us?
