Round is the preferred shape for tight spaces. You could get a round table with a leaf for occasional expansions, and a wood table would be a nice change.

Your nice might be adequate for a banquette if you find that appealing. It depends on your space measurements.

The table has to be centered under the light fixture. I would change the fixture. The quality of light from that fixture with the little candle bulbs is poor.

A round table with elegant upholstered chairs is the way to go, just as Bev shows in her top photo. Try to match legs to whatever table finish you get. Anything new that comes in should echo your basic current pieces: tan sofa, blue chairs.

If you entertain groups, then get a round table that extends into an oval.

What I'm looking at are TOO MANY CHAIRS--7 all together in what's basically one space. So rehome the wing chair and place your great blue chairs at each end of the coffee table. Get upholstered dining chairs like those Bev's photo features, but in a light tan shade like your sofa.

Then downsize the small visually cluttering pieces: both plants, plant stand crowding side table; shelf in dining area so it looks more like the elegant space Bev shows. Empty spaces give the eyes a place to rest or to focus on things like your painting and blue chairs. Two end tables and lamps are plenty to look at.

After you get your round table, corral all the stuff on the current table onto a round tray that gets parked in the kitchen until mealtime. Get some blue and white wood/corkboard placemats like these from William Sonomoa to echo your blue chairs--the two spaces need to connect and add to an elegant look.

Eventually change out the curtains to a tan and blue pattern to tie together sofa, chairs, art work. This palette but a more subtle pattern:

The downsizing of pieces is easy to do. That will open up space so you can see how you want the dining space to look and connect with the living space since it's all really one space. Good luck!

No matter how beautiful placemats, tablecloths, etc. are, they should only be placed on the dining table at meal time.

If you look for new dining chairs eventually, choose upholstered ones with somewhat low backs to let in maximum light and window views. Shape below lends itself to using them as extra chairs for company. Just make sure they're dining chairs at the right height for whatever table you get. You might consider white/tan/blue pattern as well as shown in lisedv's photo.

Have an overall plan, though, for now and later, after you remove some items from the living room area.
