Start with removing the laundry basket and dirty dog bowls.

Kathleen - I don't know if you regularly read comments on here, but there are some very blunt people.

Do remove all of the items that are not staying in the room (= clear off mantel + stuff on tables + any boxes + other non furniture items in the room) - and take a new photo. Also, show the other four walls in the room (even if one of the "walls" isn't an actual wall - but instead leads to an adjacent room).

If any sofas/tables/artwork (if there is any that we can't see) are items that cannot be replaced, please note that in a comment with your new photos. It would be nice to see what the room looks like when there is as much natural light flowing into it as possible (right now it looks very dark - and I'm not sure if that is because of the way the blinds are positioned on the windows that are showing + if there are any other covered windows that let light into the room).

What is your budget? Will you be replacing furniture + adding a rug + artwork + painting walls OR do you need to work with furniture that you currently own (many people do that and will "shop" other rooms in their home for any additional needed pieces).

Also, if you provide a simple scaled sketch of the space (either made on graph paper or using a ruler - 1/4" = 1' scale) + add all dimensions for walls/windows/doorways/etc., people will be able to suggest furniture layouts for you.

Do you like the current look of the fireplace - or would you like suggestions for changing that also? Will the current floors be staying?

Please come back with the above - there are many people who are happy to help you regardless of whether you are replacing everything - or if you need to keep your current furniture (which is very difficult to see with how dark the current photo is).
