Is there a chance that the dog would ruin a new rug? If so, I would probably hold off on something new until the dog is no longer a puppy, or training solves the problem that ruined the rug.

I would definitely bring in some color! You have plenty of gray already.

Consider a color scheme that will work with sectional/walls and kitchen if adjoining. Just based on your picture, I could see some rust/black/cream. Instead of layering two rugs, I’d just use one, as room will feel less busy and add layering instead with impactful cushions. A bonus down the road would be a large coffee table (layered) and try lowering the two prints/place closer together.
