If he's so inclined those shelves could def be styled in a more interesting way. Could he put the printer table behind the door where that other table is? Is that a TV? I think controlling those cords is important. The lamp to me, is too big so maybe he could use something less prominent and locate it on the other side of the desk so it's less obvious when you walk past the room. You could also consider a rug to warm up the space, maybe incorporating some white or cream and green to tie in the desk and the wall color.

If you're not opposed to painting the wood bookcases, I'd color drench the room. The desk is nice, but the white is a stark contrast to the rest of the room, so I'd suggest painting or replacing it. While the monitor stands out it is functional. Consider attaching it in the corner (as pictured) and so that it's not front and center when you go past the room. I'd also suggest having a nice ceiling light that hangs down over the desk instead of the lamp so there is no cord to trip over.

Agreed that the high contrast of the white desk against the background cabinetry is what first draws your eye and then you pick up the black monitor. Smaller, less prominent lamp would also help...try an actual desk lamp with a less prominent shade that can extend more directly over the work area. And notice how nicely the rugs in the idea photos submitted help to bring those rooms together cohesively.

The stark white desk is ruining the space, far more than the monitor. Can you draw and measure the room? All the walls,, exactly where french doors are etc?

The white desk is much more distracting than the monitor as is the white outlet cover. I agree with no floating shelves but I like an art wall. The power cords look like a tripping hazard.

Why have the bookcases behind him?
Turn the desk so he is either looking toward the window or the windows are behind him.

Placing the desk elsewhere is your best bet since you consider the monitor as an eyesore. Also, would take away the tripping hazard of the power cords

A few small changes that improve your room... I haven't changed the wall colour but a warm white would be nicer. I did however put the entire wall the same colour no more green wainscoting. Less pictures and no shelves on the gallery wall, picture sconces above the picture frames, the printer is in the bookcase, the desk is painted black, a black task lamp on the desk, a newer style chair by the window with a side table with the golf lamp, curtains on the window.

Agree that the desk doesn't work with your wood cabinetry--gives off a kitchen vibe. While I like some of the suggested modern ones, they don't address the back-of-the-monitor problem. Get an L-shaped desk so that the monitor can be angled. Make sure finish harmonizes with the bookcase and the floors. I like a desk that faces the door when possible. Since there's so much storage, a bulky desk isn't really needed. Oh, do note the modern light rug below in ivory and green if you're thinking of getting a rug.

What else? Get a couple large art works for the left wall. The visual field is too cluttered with all the photos on that wall in addition to more on the bookshelves and additional pictures by the doorway.

To lighten the room without repainting it, get removable wallpaper in a modern pattern for the bookshelf backs--maybe cream and green stripes or a solid that matches wall color. This is easy to do and preserves the wood bookshelves. Get a modern lamp with a cream drum shade and interesting base for the new desk.

Consider painting the wainscoting same shade as upper wall. With lighter walls, lamp, wallpaper backing in bookcase, possible modern rug, curated large art, the room will be much brighter.

I think I spy the problem here — as lovely as the view is, for an office set up, and one that may become a client received business office, the desk must be placed in front of the window wall.
The bookcase wall would then frame a modest client reception space. Matching chairs and modest sized coffee table.
The art gallery wall would have a long narrow table underneath the art for coffee and tea service, preferably matching the style of the coffee table.
More pondering in a moment! But this is the basic arrangement 🙂

Ps forgive me, running late on time. Reading up. Please do not remove the white desk, lovely piece, wonderful echo of woodwork. Pondering how to keep it in position but truly it belongs against the window wall, facing outward.
My advice? Go shopping for matching pieces! Long table, bureau, coffee table — match style and paint white.
Matching items needed:
Low vintage club chairs with white accent or upholstery.
Matching desk lamps. I feel you should keep all metals to black here.
Coordinating items:
Wood pieces mentioned above, white paint, sage accents like painted drawers or distressing, black metal pulls.
Lampshades in a woven burlap finish.
Rug will go underneath club chair and coffee table set. Recommend sage or ecru tones.
Pottery need not be matched here.
Recommend sky blue as accent color — palette is black and white, tone is sage, accent color, bright blue.
Baskets needed under long table with refreshment accoutrements.

IMO the room requires a completely new layout except for the bookshelves. They are the nicest feature and should be highlighted.

There is no getting rid of the large monitor, so I am creating an L shaped workstation positioned behind the study door to minimize the impact of the monitor. I don't think a desk that size with such an immense overhang is required for this room, so I'd recommend a 30 x 60 desk in the finish to complement the shelving unit.

By making this change it opens the space in the room overall and alllows a loveseat or large lounge chair to be placed diagonally in the corner.

An L shaped workstation with options for the large monitor could work great in the space.

The current desk and monitor placement is ideal for reducing glare - you are neither looking into the window light, nor do you have a reflection from the windows on the screen.

Once you unify the colors in this room better - the bright white desk is doing no favors - then decide on the monitor. Having a combo of black screen back and silver stand is calling even more attention to itself. Either get a monitor that is all silver or all black. And manage the cords.

I like the olive wall color and would paint the upper parts of the walls olive too so the whole room is olive with wood bookcases and trim.

If he needs a TV in the space - remove the pics and floating shelves from the side wall and hang a TV monitor on the wall - no table beneath it. Then place the printer behind the door where the TV is currently located.

The floors would look better darker. If staining is not an option, I'd get a large rug for in here.
