Great spot for a game table (checkers, chess, backgammon) and cozy reading or playing chairs.

You'll want a floor lamp in the corner; can get a rechargeable one if there's no direct outlet, or put a small chandelier on a dimmer switch (could use a remote stored in the table) above where the table would go.

Depends your need! It's a great space for a little home office set up or homework set up!

It's a little sitting area for guests in a spare bedroom.. It's a cozy reading area...it is what you make it, after you define a purpose . I'd want a little impact...

If you have young children, I’d keep furniture away from the railing. What is the distance between the doorways? Do you want it to be functional or just visually interesting?

You could make the vestibule a real feature by adding a large statement artwork—something bold or abstract to draw the eye as you come up the stairs. Alternatively, a gallery wall with smaller framed pieces or photography could add personality without overwhelming the space. If you want texture, a wall-hung textile or sculptural piece would soften the area and create visual interest. It really depends on the mood you want to set between the two hallways—calm, dramatic, or curated.

My immediate thought was a sitting area for reading or scrolling on your phone. Maybe add a coffee nook for the morning. My Dad has a balcony room similar to that outside his master bedroom overlooking the beautiful property with creeks running through. There is a desk and a pool table up there. You really can do whatever you want in that space.

Do you have plenty of storage? A beautiful armiore and dresser would give you great linen storage. Do the kids like gaming? Do you need an office? How about a pull out sofa for an extra bedroom?

It would be so frustrating. Wasted space is the bottom line. I have seen it used as a sort of office. The sort where quiet isn't a priority. When there's no other place to pay bills it would work. Book nooks are all the rage. Seems like a good space for that. If you make it yet another place to lounge. Well it depends on the family but might not get used much but will look good.

I’m guessing the home has better spaces for relaxing or working. I’m also thinking of it as a spot for storage. I ordered this very inexpensive cabinet for our mbr bathroom.

I'd get a lovely rug and a fantastic piece of art on the wall. I'm a fan of open space. Not every space has to be considered a room with a purpose. It can be very relaxing to pass through a space where openness and beauty is the main goal.

I live in a Manhattan apartment. We have an open area that others use as a dining space or office space. I choice to have art in it and we call it - somewhat jokingly, the mezzanine. It is so relaxing to just have the space empty with nothing but art.

I agree with Kendrah. a rug and a tall armoire is all you need. It has no privacy, and as Maureen said, if you have small children, furniture next to the railing could be a hazard.

I have a fairly large landing in my vacation home similar to that and all I have in it is a console table with a mirror over it. It's a pass-through area so it really is just airy open space.

Just a chest of drawers + a painting above it, or one large panel in light colors (very large) and absolutely nothing else! No rugs. Not every empty space needs to be filled.

An 8' x 13' space is basically an open ROOM.

You don't need to "fill" it....unless you should find a concept both lovely and purposeful: )

Most importantly, if you just moved in, you need not rush to "fill" any room, any space.

Time often presents need; a need is purpose. Time is almost ALWAYS an ally in decoration. Rushing is its opposite, often resulting in regret..

Great advice on this thread - just a note if I had littles that were napping upstairs I might appreciate a spot for me, comfy chair with ottoman for reading, browsing the ipad, or catching my own snooze

I'd go up and hide in plain view as they played down below, I'd have a good shelter magazine, a book, an Ipad.... and a glass of vino.

Then?! With one beady eye and not even rising from my comfy spot?

I would change nothing as to what makes a reading nook look pretty at NOT a lot of expense! You can reverse the chaise, and face the opposing wall.!

(The youngest is FIVE ..... for the worry warts.) My thought?

"I will not EVER catch you standing on my chaise, climbing near this railing. If I do? You will be the sorriest person in this family for many days. Understood? Good! Now, repeat to me what I just said, so I know that you understand".

It can be more than an I don't need it "landing,...."

LOL........ and the rather blunt descriptive approach ? Seriously..... could be really great up there! Cozy, warm., and that's just what you make of what you have. : ) A room at the top, because simple math tells me, if squared off to exclude descent and the two halls? That is no less than a 16' x 10' .5'' whatever room you'd like to call it!

I would definitely turn it into a sitting area with a table &/or desk included.

And I agree that living with it for awhile before committing to anything would give you a better idea of what you need or would be best there.

You're supposed to be smart as a parent! You're supposed to be in charge, and a five year old is nearly in kindergarten. There are rules in kindergarten and even in daycare for two and three year old kids.

There are dangers everywhere. Crosswalks, streets with oncoming cars, hot stove tops,jumping on beds and a fall on a dresser leading you directly to the ER.... and yes STRANGERS.

If you can't make your point to a child? If you can't spell out the real dangers in an age appropriate manner? You will get what you get. This child is f.iv.e.

This stuff drives me nuts. The inmates are not in charge of the asylum. You are.

My parents took not one single doo dad from a table top. You only needed the warning.....from ol' blue eyes or Mom. Ol blue eyes had that effect on me until the day he died, despite the fact I was in charge of him, by then : )

FWIW, young children are not known for their excellent judgement or impulse control - they are also not well coordinated, as their bodies are still developing.
