Actually, Bill, I've read that grasses, bamboo and other C4 plants will take over the world in 5 millions yrs due to long-term falling CO2 levels.

Ben- thankfully humans have put a lot of life-giving CO2 back into the carbon cycle. Plants worldwide really appreciate it. Fossil fuels are basically stored solar energy

LC -- it won't last long in the geologic-time sense of millions of yrs. When fossil fuels become scarce, CO2 will drop just as quickly as it has increased. Opinions are becoming firmer that the 180 ppm level during ice-age maximums were near the starvation-level for C3 plants -- as a result, present rain-forest areas were at that time mostly reduced to savanna/grass-type ecosystems.

IMO, at some point, we may need to "roast" limestone deposits (there are huge ones available) on an enormous scale to maintain a "good" CO2 level of over 280 ppm. Another way is to do what's done at some CO2-laden volcanic lakes -- install pressure-release pipes from very deep in the oceans to vent dissolved gases above the water surface into the air.
