UPDATE: Fancy that - knife rests

last month
last modified: last month

The hunt begins. DH just sent these pictures - he is back home, (FIL fell, broken hip, surgery, dementia...) and staying with our friends - again. He's quite impressed with their knife rests and now thinks we must also be fancy! Nothing is singing to me yet on Etsy but I just started looking. Don't want to go the traditional crystal route - prefer offbeat if there is such a thing in knife rests. Kitschy? Modern? Hand made? Ceramic? Where else to look?

Also, notice the tablecloth? I've told our friends that if it ever goes missing, they'll find it here on my table. I've looked for something similar with no luck. It was purchased in Paris long ago, wears like iron, is synthetic (poly?), fabric is not smooth, has some texture. Suggestions where to look for something similar?

The shopping mojo here is way above my skill set!

Seems like chopstick rest, I wonder if searching that way might yield more results . These dachsunds are cute

Yes that tablecloth is lovely. Swoon.

Those animal knife rests are soo cute. I have chopstick holders from Esty, but mine are ceramic.

Dachshunds seem to be a recurring theme with knife rests because of the elongated body.

    Those leaves are lovely!

I like all of these - not enough to pull the trigger yet

Beautiful fabric Nicole - yikes on the price! And my guess is not at all washable wchich is a requirement - I'm known to make a mess ;-)

Well, I’ll be hornswoggled! Knife rests. There are 12 of these in my paternal grandmother’s silver set and I've always wondered what they are. My grandmother died long before my parents met and I never asked my mother if she knew what they are. She probably knew, but i just never asked. I’ve just ignored them. For 57 years I’ve ignored them. Amazing. Thanks, DLM and husband.

When we were in Sicily this past spring, many of the restaurants had simple marble utensil rests. I looked briefly for some when we returned, then forgot about them. I'll have to look again!

Well, after reviewing, a few necessary courses of action have become clear: 1. if DH is entertaining knife rests, you must indulge this interest, if not for the rest of us here; and 2. a trip to Paris to find a replica of that lovely tablecloth is in order.

My DS brought me a beautiful set of chopsticks and holders from his recent trip to Taiwan. I love all types of Asian food, but I don't do chopsticks. So they're just decorative and a reminder of his thoughtfulness.

Warm wishes to you both, and hope FIL makes an easy recovery.

thank you Feathers - sadly this recovery is anything but easy. I would love a trip to Paris again - someday maybe. And part of the fun with the knife rests will be the hunt. There are some antique stores I'll get to while DH is out of town and just maybe.....

OTOH came across these on Etsy billed as Christmas knife rests made from oyster shells - the project du jour around here a while back although I don't remember anyone thinking of them as knife rests. Was is Jojo who made some? I remember they were lovely. May have to track down some shells although I said that before and never did. Christmas floral would not be my choice.

I suspected that. Take care, and take care of yourselves.

Yes, @jojoco made them for those of us who were at the Austin GTG. So pretty. I'd share a pic but its not at this house.

Sorry about your porr FIL. Especially hard when patients have dementia too.

I love those animal knife rests!! I have 12 of the the crystal dumbell shaped ones and a set of ceramic ones that are chopstix holders as they are narrower. You definitely need them!

I have a cute ceramic cat knife rest an elderly relative gave me when he was downsizing his stuff to move after his wife died. It was a souvenir they picked up in France decades ago. Unfortunately, it has a little chip in the one ear.

Indonesia is famous for it's hand woven pretty, light weight, washable fabrics. THIS one says "vintage"....link

The animal knife rests are fabulous! You need something in that vein. Imagine all the themes they could take: tools, cat poses (maybe not the butt-washing), musical notes, furniture, plants!

OK bpath, manifest tool knife rests into the universe for me! So fitting for DH. Hammer, screw driver, wrench, hand saw, pliers.... I do hope to find something quirky.

Sigh. We may not have that visit in 10 days afterall. We were supposed to meet at Tree House Grove in Gatlinburg for a fall color/hike getaway then come here for a visit. But FIL has struggled, wants to go into hospice care. And so it goes....

How nice of your friends to send those. I’m sorry about your struggles with your FIL.

I would keep looking for a similar tablecloth, especially at this time of year with T’giving approaching.

I love those oyster shells. Coincidentally DD just made some for her pickleball girlfriends. They are all at the beach for a little getaway (the house has a pickleball court!) and she made them as gifts for a little memento. She decoupage a cocktail napkin onto the shells and painted the gold edge.
