Kitchen Layout Input - Cabinet Drawings Attached

last modified: 12 months ago

I have gotten an initial rough draft of the cabinet units from my cabinet maker. We will go more in depth as we move forward, but I wanted to get some input if there was anything glaring that could be corrected now.

Specifically, I am considering how to handle the corner for the base cabinets. They moved the hood over to the right about 6 inches which allows more room to the left, but does throw off the symmetry of that wall.

I am also in the process of deciding how many actual base cabinets that I need for my bulkier small appliances. (Microwave drawer goes in the island). My initial thought is to keep one or two on the far right, and perhaps the one to the left of the cooktop, and make the rest drawers, including the island. I would likely change the drawers in the sink base to a cabinet as I don't see the point with the plumbing and dishwasher drain, disposal, etc., running under there, unless we just use a false front.

The upper cabinet to the far left would be a false front in this drawing as it will his the hood when it swings out. There has to be a better way to handle that issue.

Both the oven unit and the pantry/fridge butt up to the side of a doorway, though I may be able to squeeze another few inches on the oven side.

I am glad to answer any questions, and I appreciate any input.

My under sink storage. Really good use of what is often seen as wasted space, and convenient.

Let your plumber know this is what you’re planning on. Mine had no problem accomodating the drawers.

The only lower cabinets I have are sink cabinet , corner cabinet and a narrow one for cookie sheets and trays ... every other lower is a drawer cabinet.

For me, you plan has drawer bases that are too narrow and don't maximize storage.

Your cooktop and hood are too close to the corner.

Overall, that's not a good plan.

    New construction or remodel?

What can you change -- walls, windows?

We are a bit stuck with what we have. Remodel. The worst contractors. Now former contractors. I’m pretty stuck with what I’ve got as far as structure.

RE appliance placements 1. place range and hood to right of window. 2. place oven stack over on right side wall where you show fridge. 3 Bring fridge over to left side wall where the oven stack was.

That is not a bad idea. I had thought about the cooktop to the right of the window, but had not gotten to the point of moving the fridge. that would put the fridge next to the back door, but would free up space for the hood and give me a landing for the cooktop.

Would you leave the DW where it is?

I like herbflavors idea. The DW should be moved to the left side of the sink so that it is not in the prep zone between the sink and cooktop.

This is not a huge kitchen. Do you have a pantry? Do you need two ovens? A range would free up a lot of cabinet and counter space.

A design that requires a compromise right off the bat (the blind corner cabinet) is not a good design. Your cooktop placement also voids the base cabinet - there's no practical way to use that space. I'm OK with a voided corner (I had one in my last kitchen), but only if it results in better function and storage around the corner, which you don't have.

Ann, I have a hard time with a range due to back problems. I would like the double ovens if I possibly can. How do you feel about herbflavor’s idea to move the cooktop to the right of the sink? That would let me have an actual corner cabinet.

The only pantry is the one next to the fridge in the drawing. The pantry, fridge, ovens and cooktop can be moved around, but i am limited with the windows and walls.

Cabinet makers are not usually kitchen designers and that is what you need then the cabinet makes makes the cabinets that were designed . If you have issues with your back not sure how drawers for small appliances will work I like a wall with fridge and true pullout pantries on that same wall All drawers for base cabinets and at least 30" wide for pots and pans and 36" better one set on either side of the range makes the most sense and you can even have deawers under the sink. I have no idea waht you mean about the hood .
