The room feels very somber. I would find a different lighter rug that I loved and then look for new fabric for the sofa.

I'd use a chunky nubby light grey fabric that has a modern feel to it.

If you want a more modern feel and are keeping the rug, I would not select a color from the rug. The rug is very traditional, as is the sofa, so getting a complimentary but not matching color will make it feel more modern.
