Your favorite Delbard Painter rose?

I only have one,Camille Pissarro, but I love it.
The photo is from 2024. It’s twice that height today.
Colors are always variable but it can vary from pale pink in the spring to almost crimson in cold temps.
I notice April and Ashley has a large selection of these roses (or they will have, hopefully). Who else is growing them? What do you like most/least?

I have one, Sylvia - Alfred Sisley. From Walmart, sold with attenuated roots in tight-fitting plastic wrap bearing the name ”Expert Gardener” or words like that. I don’t remember if grower information appeared. $10. I remember seeing yours and at least 1 or 2 others in the series for sale there too.

It’s remained small. Non-prime location shaded by twin towers Sunny Sky and Poseidon, and attacked by rabbits. Healthy foliage no spray, and pretty good bloom productivity (when rabbits are deterred). I too like that colors vary. My only stripey.

My favorite is Edouard Manet (aka Climbing Claude Monet). He has an OGR chalice shape and is probably the most fragrant of the Painters, profuse and near constant bloomer.

Yes! Edouard Manet is my fav too, but I still do not have it! Was so hope that AA will bring this rose, but looks like not at this time. Very sad….

Great roses, all. What about Marc Chagall?

Of the four newer "painter" striped Delbards I have, Marc Chagall is the wimpiest. I got it in 2021, and it's not growing very well... in fact I almost think it's growing a bit backwards. I do like its color a lot though. I've had Camille Pissarro since around 2002 (given to me by a trading partner... shhh) and I bought another one in 2021. It's probably my favorite of the four when combining growth habit and color. Alfred Sisley (got in 2021) is fine and small-ish and has a nice orange tone, which is different. Maurice Utrillo has been particularly spectacular this year. It's another one I got in 2021, and it always did fine, but this year it leapt. It has been covered in blooms all spring and summer. I kick myself for not getting a whole bush shot of it. I have a bunch of other stripes, but those are the only of the Painter Series I have. If you can find them, I'd highly recommend Pink Intuition and Red Intuition, Delbard stripes from the mid-2000s. They're HTs and spectacular :-D

In a similar vein, but a chef not a painter, I used to have Delbard’s ‘Guy Savoy’ which was an extremely vigorous, large rose. I had to move it to a part shade location because it outgrew the the only suitable sunny spot. Unfortunately it bloomed far better in sun!

Susan, interesting about wimpy Marc Chagall. About Maurice Utrillo—is his red more fire-engine, say, or just crimson? Orange won’t work in my garden, rifls, so no Alfred Sisley.
April &Ashley has Paul Gauguin— you never hear much about that one. Looks striking.

Very raw iPhone photo, but Camille Pissarro is on the left. Dream Come True reaching for the skies. To the right, Lady Hillingdon.

Sylvia, honestly those four Painter roses I have are so incredibly variable in terms of their colors that I can't hammer down any type of fundamental colors, or level of stripes vs. speckles! The first three pics below show Maurice Utrillo in his wide variety. As for Alfred Sisley, he's blooming now, and doesn't have much in the way of orange tones at the moment. The fourth pic is the only pic I have of Alfred from 3 yrs ago. To be honest, Maurice and Alfred and Camille have all looked similar at various points over the years! And I should correct my statement from last night about Alfred being small... he's actually a nice size.

Maurice Utrillo (the below 3 pics)

Without question my favorite Delbard Painter's rose is Edgar Degas. He is probably in my top 10 favorite roses of all time out of 1000+ I have now. He has constantly changing and intriguing blooms and as you can see from the bush shot he can get the size of a large sofa. He is disease free for me and constantly blooming and once mature he just glows. Right now my replacement Edgar is still gaining size and not a huge bloomer but I have given him plenty of room to conquer.

Having said this I love all the painter roses and I am eagerly hoping to replace Claude Monet and Paul Gauguin. I have Maurice Utrillo, Camille Pissarro, Marc Chagall, and Alfred Sisley.

Here's another vote for Maurice Utrillo. Great colors throughout the season. Holds a good habit and gives lots of color.

Susan, your photos show another side of Alfred Sisley. You’re right, there is so much variability among these roses that to say one is predominantly “red” or “orange” is never going to be completely acccurate. Hugo grrr, Maurice Utrillo is terrific!

    Good observation susan.

It’s hard to find any orange on the 5 webpages of Alfred Sisley photos at HMF.

Not a Delbard but similar…and very cold hardy. Frida Kahlo has been the best performer thus far of the 13 roses I planted in June.

Own root from Heirloom, no fertilizer except a touch of Osmocote. Amazingly healthy in my no spray garden. No disease except the tiniest bit of blackspot in the center of the plant. No bug damage except a teensy bit from Japanese beetles. Beautiful continual blooms still going in Zone 5b. I love it!! 🦋

    Beautiful MC close-up, Roselady.

Is that some protective barrier I see to keep pedestrians from overcoming centrifugal force and falling into the shrubbery?

Rosy lady, I love Marc Chagall as a standard! Is yours 36 inches high?

Lovely house and flower display, by the way.

@rifis (zone 6b-7a NJ), I think that's for when deer go off the rails!

Rosylady, I follow you on insta..Your place is dreamy. How do your roses hold up to your weather? What diseases or problems do you get?

Alfred Sisley is top bloomer for me. Loves full sun (12- 5 pm) and brings color variation of coral , yellow and pink throughout the season. Hot coral on display in high heat.

Can you tell me which of the Delbard Painters Rose Series is the most black spot resistant and winter hardy to the cane tips in zone 6? Thank you!

    Moses.

They are all beautiful. I would love to try at least one of these roses (with zone 5 hardiness) next year.

rifis....Thank you....and your description of my deer fence is hilarious! It was hastily constructed a few years after the garden was made. It works very well, but yes, it does look a bit odd.

Thank you Silvia....yes, it's a 36 inch high standard. Our Home Depots locally were awash with them last year!

Z10Socal....Thank you! The roses do really, really well up here. They hybrid teas not so much, but shrubs roses, Austins, hybrid musks are fabulous. Blackspot is the nemesis here, but many varieties stay quite healthy. Another tough thing is rain ruining blooms in spring and autumn....but we are bone dry from July-Sept, so that helps keep things healthy (as long as we irrigate). I have never sprayed or used chemicals in my garden. It is NOT perfect disease-wise...but they roses still grow really well. The biggest problem I have in my garden is too much shade. On the plus side, the colors are nicer and the blooms last a long time.

Moses - I find that all the ones I grow are cane hardy to the tips in zone 5/6 - Edgar Degas, Maurice Utrillo, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisely, Marc Chagall. If I had to pick, I'd say a well-established Edgar beats the rest and Maurice and Marc are a little less hardy (cane hardy but not always tip hardy). None of them get noticeable blackspot in my dry zone 5/6, but I don't notice blackspot till it's bad. They're mostly shrubs as a category which tends to mean better odds for disease resistance and hardiness.

I noticed on gardenarium, an Australian site, every Delbard rose imaginable available as standards—! Does anyone know of a U.S. nursery making these available? I would love love love to have a Maurice Utrillo standard, preferably 36”. Can I get one without relocating Down Under? Thanks in advance.

Sylvia, since you're close, it might be worth calling Otto to inquire. But I don't know about their propensity for carrying standards :-D

Susan, I love Otto’s, and especially I love that they’re about 40 minutes from me, but their standard selections are very ho-hum. All the usual suspects. Maybe they’ll read this and rethink (yeah, right).
