primary bedroom re-model

last month

Hello.
We recently purchased a new home and it’s amazing, but it’s 25 years old and needs some updating.

I’d like to start with the primary bedroom. This is not our furniture. I’m looking for paint colour suggestions, fixtures and window covering. Also what to do with that book.

The home is a beautiful, southern French style home. I’d like to have it updated but still maintain that timeless vibe. I could go for white walls and calm colours - but would love some other ideas too!

Choose your bedding first. Wall color should come from the bedding.

I like to switch my bedding often (I have a bedding fetish according to my daughters - I have at least 12 linen duvet cover sets!) I'm currently trying to decide on a wall paint that will work with the different bedding (throw pillows/throw blankets/coverlets + duvets + sheets).

Starting with your bedding first is the best idea. If you are using white bedding, you don't have to select the actual bedding first because white bedding will work with any paint color you like.

However, you have to stick with your plan of using white bedding!

    SW Cascade Green:

    SW Evergreen Fog:

There are also neutrals like 100% linen duvet covers that aren't dyed - the linen is just it's natural color (sometimes it's a bit lighter and sometimes has a bit more color to it) which looks nice layered with white sheets + throw pillows with different textures. Natural (undyed) linen will also look nice with the colors posted above for white bedding.

You can do a search for calming bedroom paint colors - most (if not all) will work with natural linen bedding.

A popular bedroom paint color is SW Sea Salt. It can look more blue in certain rooms or more green in others. You need to sample it on your walls in order to know which way it will lean.

It's a very calming color - and it's very pretty. Some people will cut it by 50% and use it as a whole house paint color (it just has more of a hint of color if you cut the color by 50- 75%).

You can't go by the photos posted by designers or DIYers - the next two photos are of the same bedroom with Sea Salt on the walls:

This room is also Sea Salt - although it looks greener than I've seen it in other photos (and from what I've seen in person). Maybe the exposure of the sunlight is affecting the color? It looks pretty with natural linen bedding.

You can also color drench your room and create a moody bedroom - natural linen bedding will look nice with a moody paint (white bedding would be too stark against a darker/more saturated paint color).

You can color drench your bedroom with dark/saturated colors OR with lighter (less saturated colors) - or neutrals:

Not a bedroom - but looks nice in this living room:

If you want to use colored bedding, you need to purchase it first - and then select a wall color that works with the bedding.

Whether you go with neutral bedding = any wall color will work OR bedding that has certain colors, you need to make that decision first. It's difficult to select a wall color (other than a neutral one - like white) - and then search for bedding that will work with your wall color.

I’m not fussy on my bedding and I usually do swap it out seasonally, sticking to very neutral colours. So I’d rather pick a settle for this room to update it with paint, wallpaper, lighting and fixtures. I’m also looking for suggestions for the book area.
