Do I need to lower this mirror?

last month

Hi all, we’re moving into our new home. Just hung my late mom’s mirror in the dining area. I went a little higher than normal, bc i didnt want to just reflect the back of the chairs. It’s 32” off the floor, and 36” off the 10’ ceiling. It looks too high to me, but may just need getting used to. Thoughts? Please ignore all the moving mess.

it's too low. centered at eye level. find the center of the mirror and hang it.

Is that the best spot in the room for it?

I agree... no need to reflect the back of the chairs.

    It's too low

Mount is so that a 30" tall console table could fit below it.

I'd consider adding pillar wall candleholders on either side. You can use the battery opperated flameless pillars. https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Kalalou-NMAN1011-hurac%C3%A1n-montada-cristal/dp/B01H88V550

Seeing that mirror is at the end of the table, there's not much chance people will see their refection as they eat.

I personally never like a mirror in an area where it so closely reflects people eating. It’s a beautiful mirror. Is there anonther spot in the room where it could be hung further from the table maybe hung horizontally over a sideboard?

It does not look anchored. It needs a console table below it. Can you fit one in? Is there another wall that can be used?

We’re downsizing in this house, that’s literally the only wall in the dining area😂

I’d love a console there, but I only have 40” between chair and wall. Beverly, i love the idea of sconces but was planning on antique plates on either side.

So raise the bottom to 36-38”? the mirror is 53”.

Can you try hanging it horizontally instead. Nice home

I also feel like it is a bit too low already

A bit too low for me. I don't follow any rules when it comes to hanging art/mirrors! I eyeball and look for the spot where it looks balanced with the room and furnishings in the room.

I think it's fine, since you won't have anything below it. In a room where people are always seated, I think things can be a bit lower than in a room where you are standing and passing by, or standing and walking toward it and it's viewed from a higher viewpoint.

I personally do not like a mirror that reflects people eating and I would want my back to it when seating myself for dinner or I would hide behind someone. If there is no other space for it I would say it is too low.

I agree horizontal to reflect the window a lot more than the furniture but maybe the DR is just not the place to hang it. I actually dislike mirrors in DRs no one wants to watch themselves eating.

Who in the hell watches themselves eating? I never understood that objection, we’re too busy eating or talking among ourselves to look at ourselves in the mirror. although we have one very good looking friend that does occasionally, lol.

Btw, I think its a tad too low, or try it horiziontally as others have suggested.

Another vote to raise it just a skosh.

Are you keeping up with our mutual friend?

So i think I’m going to try to find an 8-10” console to go under this. Will update as I can.

bbstx, I have not. We are just in the new house, and have been crazy. I def need to call her for lunch, and will do so this week. By reporting of a mutual friend, she is killing it rn and I couldn't be happier for her. Can’t wait to catch up.

edit: bbs i just texted her, thanks for reminding me!

I have the Strut console in my DR. It is very narrow, very contemporary, and is out of step with the rest of my very traditional house. I love it!
