Migration time again

last year

last modified: last year

this is almost a repost from last spring. while there are always some robins that hang tough thru the winter a lot do migrate. so, this past week instead of my usual dozen or so patrolling for worms I've had an average of 40 every morning fighting over the birdbath. they line up on my shop roof and on an iron border fence wait their turn with 2 or 3 sitting on the rim drinking. then one will fly in & upset the status quo & jump to the front of the line. sometimes when a fight breaks out a mockingbird or a bluebird will slip in & take a quick dip. this goes on for a couple of hours & then settled down to one or two an hour. I've had several hawks drinking & bathing & one morning a shocker...a turkey vulture got a drink & tried to take a dip. just happened to look out at the right time. that was comical to watch. the bath out front has been claimed by purple finches & wrens who are more open minded than the robins. I've seen up to a dozen at time taking a dip. this one gets refilled every morning as the deer drink it dry overnight. traffic has been heavier than normal because we have a serious drought in progress. I've also seen squirrels & coons wetting their whistles.

BTW-we still have hummingbirds.

Photographs, please. I am always so happy when I see a turkey buzzard.

we've had a changing of the guard. the bulk of the robins have moved. i'm down to my 15-20 regulars. picked a few more bluebirds. hummingbirds have gone south. black cap chickadees & titmice are back for the winter.

I haven't seen a bird in the bird baths for a couple of weeks. I hear birds now and then but I'm not seeing them much. I seem to have changed my plantings to the point that I don't have a lot of seeds for them this time of year. Mostly because of the rabbits that seem to eat the best perennials for birds.

another group just arrived. i had over 100 robins in my yard this morning. refilled the bird bath 4 times. the usual suspect are still around. mockingbirds, cardinals, bluejays, Carolina & house wrens, woodpeckers ( types ), flickers, bluebirds, titmice, condors, brown trashers, black capped chickadees, & probably a few others. also those awful starlings and house sparrows.

i did spot a mob of black & white pelicans flying over about 10 days ago and an occasional flock of geese.

my grandson is helping me replace some fence post & a red shouldered hawk landed on the fence about 10ft from us. it looked over & noticed us & had an oh cr*p moment & flew off.
