Should I add the second big island?

last month

Okay so the layout of my kitchen is more narrow, I’ve just extended the whole house 2 ft. The objective is to fit in a small island in the middle. 24 in wide, 5ft long. On each side I would have 3 ft of walking space. Now, I’m wondering if I should put a table or an island on the open space shown in the design I made.

This is how it’s looking as of right now, I might demo that wall on the right

My design book recommends 48" kitchen aisles.

We need a full layout diagram with measurements in order to be able to help. Check out the New to Kitchens thread for more details.

I’d nix the idea of a second island. Your model shows one with a curved support and it appears to be just floating with no particular purpose.

Just looking at the pics and your vague description you do not have room for even one island let alone a "second big island"

Giant NOPE on any island with only 33" of actual walking space by the time you deduct the counter overhang.

Also, way to go with doing demo before planning. :*/ That's a sure fire way way to have to live in a disaster for a very long time.

That big honkin' island just hanging there by itself in the empty space looks very disjointed and uncomfortable for anyone to scoot in against the wall to actually sit at it. Big fat no to that. Get a kitchen table and chairs for that space instead.

New design? Should I just get rid or the big island? Currently I measure 36in of aisle space on the small island

No to duplicate islands. Always no. They create a "Pacman kitchen" with more aisles than working space. They mean you're always too far from whatever you need. Solid no.

As another poster said, definitely pay attention to your work aisle dimensions. 3'6" would give you the space of a typical hallway (go down to Lowes or Home Depot and walk through their sample kitchens -- their aisles are 3'6" -- see if you personally find that comfortable). 4' is better. 4'6" and you're still okay, but more-for-the-sake-of-more is not better. Be intentional in your choices.

To get the best help, we need more information. In particular, we need a fully-measured 2-D (bird's eye/overhead view) plan of the entire space under consideration. In your case, the Kitchen and space where you are proposing the second island. Do you have table space elsewhere?

Please see the "New to Kitchens? Read Me First!" thread, especially the Featured Answer (but don't ignore the top post). It describes the layout and other items plus a few questions. It also includes a sample fully-measured layout.

    ------------------------

    In the meantime, some observations::

The island is a barrier island - it's a barrier b/w the sink and range and b/w the refrigerator and sink. This is a very poor design.

How are you measuring aisles? They should be measured to/from the items sticking out into the aisle the farthest - appliance handles, counter overhangs, etc. They should not be measured cabinet-to-cabinet since cabinet measurements only include the cabinet box. They do not include doors/drawer fronts, hardware, counter overhangs, etc.

Counters overhang cabinets by approx 1.5", so the perimeter counter run is at least 25.5" deep. Where the range is, it's closer to 28".

That island that you think is 24"D will really be 27"D once the counters are on - unless you are getting custom shallow cabinets no more than 21"D. 1.5" overhang on all sides of the island.

    Minimum recommended work aisles (NKBA):

    • 42" for a one-person (and always one-person) work aisle. I would add with no significant traffic in that aisle (i.e., not an aisle b/w two frequently used spaces like a Dining Room or Living/Family Room or Foyer or similar).
    • 48" for two or more people working in the Kitchen - cooking, baking, prepping, cleaning up, loading/unloading the DW, getting a snack, etc.

I'm going to blunt here...from what little information you've provided you appear to have too-narrow aisles and a dysfunctional layout overall.

We'd like to help, but we really need more info! As Eam44 said, you must already have a measured layout of some kind. Check out the measurements and if any are missing, add them (by hand is fine) and then post it here.

Your space needs a peninsula and a kitchen table, NOT an island. You don’t have room for one island, much less two weird unusable ones.

Not enough clearance and this is exactly why everyone if asking for a full floor plan with ALL dimensions.

    Peninsula. No islands.

Not even enough room for one small island. Why the island obsession? Why not just design a great galley with enough counter and storage space?

You are fooling yourself if you think you can design with rendering images and not an actual layout with good measurements.
