countertop peninsula question

last month

We are adding a peninsula here with an overhang for seating. We are debating how long to run the counter top. Should it Stop at “A”, or run it all the way to the back wall as in “B”. Or is there another option we have not considered. I appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Agree with trying the trial run with mocking up the counter as suggested by apple pie. This will give you your answer.

We had the almost identical kitchen in our last home, had the penninsula countertop run to the wall. BTW, make sure the overhang is deep enough, ours was a little to shallow for me.

all the way to the wall so you can get added support. Make it as deep as you can, and get stools that fit UNDER the countertop for a clean look.

Even if you have to adjust the adjacent dining table and chairs, make the overhang substantial, you'll use it.

Can you show us a photo of the dining table? I wouldn't want to crowd the table for the sake of bar stools.

That column should be removable because it's right next to the outside wall framing that supports the upper ceiling, etc. I'd take it out in favor of backsplash and wide more flush trim all the way over for the width of the counter of at least 12 inches and maybe 15 inches. Wide trim from floor to ceiling or end the backsplash at the upper cupboard and plain painted wallnear the counter.

You haven't shown nearly enough of the adjacent space. Please photograph the opposite side of the space. It's all one space to consider, not just the kitchen. We can't see what's in the walkway, where the fridge is, whether you have space for full counter chairs. Please come back with more photos.

Here is how to post a Design Dilemma to get the best results. (Post only one thread on same Dilemma. You can add photos to original thread.) You need to show the whole space—all four sides of an entire space—even if it’s about one specific Dilemma. Commenters need to see doorways, windows, closets, finishes throughout the space to make informed suggestions. In open spaces, Commentors need to see adjacent spaces like living, dining, family room areas that adjoin a kitchen. This is so finishes like cabinetry, paint, and flooring harmonize in the whole space.

I hear you about the column, but there is hvac in there as well as some electrical. Bringing it all the way back was too costly for the budget. It’s 100 percent better than before but not perfect. Also the big formal dining room table is going away and a smaller one to be purchased at some point in the future.

Go with B. Then you don't have to worry about things falling off the edge and you have more elbow space. It will look more complete and finished.

I would check it with bar stools. Would it fit 3 or just 2 of them? Then you would see how long you need to go.

Thanks all. It Seems the overwhelming consensus is option B. I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions.

we have a similar situation and went with A, because we actually have a shelving unit in that corner! nobody's going to sit at the 4" counter.

"A", but make sure about 2" of the overhang dies into the wall please.

"A" and keep in mind....a 90 degree cut should have a small inside radius. (similar to sink cutouts) This is to prevent the top from cracking. If your fabricator doesn't radius it....it will be a stress area and could crack. I had a fabricator not radius this same type of layout and the whole top cracked within a couple months. The fabricator wouldn't admit guilt....until we showed them their mistake. Homeowner was a lawyer....and I pushed hard to make them make it right. They replaced the top....this time with a slight radius inside corner.
