Ethan Allen Issue Resolution?

last month

Has anyone had luck resolving issues with Ethan Allen furniture recently?

We recently purchased a Clermont Bed and two Canton Night Tables, all with Homestead Light Brown, Oak finish. The issue is that the finish on the nightstands does not match the finish on the bed. They look terrible next to each other.

We saw the issue immediately and tried to refuse delivery. The delivery team saw issue too and they took photos. They said to note it on the delivery ticket and contact our designer, so we did.

The showroom manager came out to our house and took photos of their finish sample board against each of the three pieces. He saw the issue too and said it was “pretty cut and dried”.

The next time I talked to him, he told me that “quality control” had reviewed the photos and determined that the night tables’ finish was “within acceptable tolerance for that type of wood”. So corporate wouldn’t be offering any solutions. But he might be able to do something at the showroom level. That was over a week ago now and he’s no longer returning my calls.

Now what?

Can the design of your room take a deliberately non matching look? For instance doing the charcoal stain option on the nightstands or bed? But then again, I vehemently dislike matching sets in general…yes a trip to the store would be in order.

All of these examples show a mix of styles/finishes between the bed and nightstands. Not one ‘matching’ set…https://www.houzz.com/magazine/the-10-most-popular-new-bedrooms-right-now-stsetivw-vs~183261970

@chloebud thanks for the idea! I had posted on Ethan Allen's Facebook page as well and they just sent me a private reply (via Messenger) with the same info. So I just sent a detailed email, with photos attached, to Customer Service. I'll post here when I hear back.

@la_la Girl banned from Pottery Barn?! That's a story I'd love to hear right now. But yes, I've already decided that I'll no longer be buying from Ethan Allen. Mistakes happen and I get it, but the after-sale support is definitely lacking.

  • last month

@thinkdesignlive thanks so much for the inspiration! You're right, if my credit card dispute is successful, then non-matching will be the best option. If we get to that point, I'd love to post a picture of the bed, bed cover, art, and get some advice on new night tables.

Sofia, would love for them to know about your post here. Lots of views and I, for one, would hesitate ordering from them based on your post. Lately I’ve had two companies go above and beyond with customer service…MOEN and WUSTHOF. WHY NOT YOU, ETHAN ALLEN?

The DELIVERY should have been refused. Not let into the room. You put the defect right back on their doorstep !! and back at the local store you dealt with.

Ethan Allen quality is just not what it was decades ago when mom got her stuff. It is actually VERY very overpriced, one step up from Ashley furniture and not much above Home Sense junk imports. The finishes are horrendous, and come with the "touch up" stick for a REASON.

I don't love the nightstands with the bed; a NON match would be a lot more interesting: )

Show the entire room, as of now. Add more pictures.

This is not what you asked and not what you should have to live with BUT I’m curious how noticeable this is once your bed is made with pillows and other fittings. The reason I ask is that the colors seem similar but I think the wood grain is what’s really throwing things off. That might not be so obvious once everting is actually in situ. Just a thought. I’m sorry you are dealing with this.

Oh, as soon as I saw the night tables I definitely told the delivery team that I was refusing delivery . But the delivery team refused my refusal. Maybe I should play a reverse UNO and deliver the nightstands to the showroom so they can proudly display to all potential customers what an "acceptable tolerance" looks like ;)

Even with the bedding in place, the night tables still look...off? They have a weird kind of green tinge to them. Since they've lived in my home for a month now, I've had a lot of time to think. From time to time, I'll think well, maybe if I put runners over the tops of the night tables they wouldn't look quite so bad. And maybe if we painted the room a different color the night tables would look a little better? But you know what, I'm so over "making do". This is our bedroom and I want to love every single thing surrounding us. And I absolutely do not, nor will I ever, love these night tables. So they are leaving regardless of what else happens.

And maybe I'll just have to chalk this up as an expensive lesson. And march forward. I should be able to post pics of the room in a couple days.

Oh, and a quick update for anyone who's following along. I cc'd the Design Consultant on the email that I sent to Customer Service since I mentioned her by name. She immediately emailed a reply apologizing that this situation has not yet been resolved (this is notable since it's the first time anyone from Ethan Allen has apologized) and letting me know that I didn't hear from her directly because her manager had taken over. This was followed by a phone call from the showroom manager with excuses for not returning my calls and offering the contact information for Customer Service. That's it.

It looks like the bedside tables have the same grain as the foot board of the bed. The headboard itself, show less grain. But, I found these photos on the Ethan Allen website. and it looks fine. However, what you got is not what I see in your photos.

Take a photo for us of the foot board. Guessing that is the "wood"? that was used for the tables.

Keep complaining, Go on Google. Name names if you have to. I got an immediate call back and my issue was resolved. But it took a ehile.

mine had to do with the down cushions not feeling like the sample cushions and looking sloppy.

The inserts were all changed. Theybtrued tontalk me into just replaing the seats. nope.

If EA does leave you high and dry I’d say to paint either the bed or the nightstands your favorite color that coordinates with your room/decor. Hopefully EA will do what’s right but if they don’t then paint can be your friend.

    last modified: last month

It’s sad that the EA of old with good made-in-North America products, service and designers is no more.

I am in the market for new furniture and won’t buy from EA now based on your/other posts. There was a recent thread where the EA designer was telling the customer/poster that the bunched seam (on just one of several chairs) was a “comfort feature“ rather than a poor sewing job or underfill. I almost spit out my coffee laughing when I read that creative explanation. Link: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6507483/is-this-an-upholstery-defect-on-my-brand-new-ethan-allen-chairs#29637744

The delivery team refusing your delivery refusal is a new undesirable tactic. But they will say anything just to get the furniture off the truck.

Continued social media complaints (name the store manager and store location) and the CC chargeback are your best strategy. Disclose that the manager visually inspected the products and agreed with you until overruled by Corporate.

Update! I received an email response from Ethan Allen Customer Service. In a nutshell:

    * Ethan Allen does not guarantee exact match in finish; instead aiming for an overall blend

    * Customer Service has communicated with their plant to ensure new tables are blended as closely as possible to the finish sample board

    * They offer to reorder both night tables or issue a refund.

    I chose a refund.

Thanks to everyone here for sharing suggestions, experiences, and moral support, it is all much appreciated.

    Maybe black?

Black was my first thought too. And with just one drawer, the one in the photo looks less bulky than the larger ones. I also like that there's no open shelf to dust :) I used Google Lens to find it online and I'm pretty sure it's Nathan James.

I just found this one too. The color looks like a warm dark gray. And the silver pulls and trim might help to pull everything together? Plus the drawers are soft close.. It's Bernhardt, which I don't know anything about. Good quality? I haven't found anywhere online to order a finish sample, so thinking I'll go to a local store that carries the line to see if I can get my hands on one.

  • last month

Yes the black nightstand in my photo in my post below is from Nathan James.

The gray one in your photo is nice looking. But with the gray in your rug and art, I wonder if gray nightstands will be “too much” gray.

Sofia thanked Design Fan (NE z7a)
  • last month

I wouldn’t choose grey either. I think you need to find something distinct and different from the bed frame. Black is nice.

    Sofia thanked WestCoast Hopeful
  • last month

Good point, I'll back away from the gray! What do we think of this Crate & Barrel Keane nightstand? The dimensions are great, it has two soft close drawers and integrated charging. It's different from the bed in color, but similar in shape and simplicity. I'm not super excited about the open shelf (more dusting), but we can't have everything.

  • last month

I like the C&B black nightstand!

Room & Board has a wide range of black nightstands too.

Are you putting any furniture on the wall under the two windows across from the bed? A long console in black or a mix of black/wood tone similar to the bed frame would look really nice.

I do want to put the now-empty half of our bedroom to work. Just haven't been able to figure out what to do with it. Another thing that's been on my mind is creating a space for our first grandchild, whose parents bought a house in our neighborhood and is due at the end of December. I imagine he'll be with us when parents are out, sometimes overnight.

I've realized that we don't currently have a rocking chair anywhere in our house. So I was starting to think about using this space in our bedroom to relax/read/listen to music and putting a couple of rocking chairs in there. But I can't quite see it in my mind. Plus, if baby needs to be rocked at night, we'd be interrupting DH's sleep.

Your idea of a credenza got me thinking. We could relocate our office into this bedroom. There's a credenza currently in the office that could go under the windows and we'd just need to move in the desk and stand with printer/shredder. We're both retired, so no one uses the office while someone else is sleeping.

That would leave the current office empty. It's about 8' x 8', so one rocking chair and a pack 'n' play should fit. Maybe a changing table. Then we've got a small nursery at our house. The location is good since it's right in between the primary and guest bedrooms. I'm kind of liking this idea since we have six adult kids and a couple more are talking about starting families in the next year or so.

The downside might be electronics in the bedroom. But maybe if we don't like it, we could put in a couple of folding screens or have our contractor throw up a couple of walls to partially divide the spaces.

    Thoughts? What am I missing?

  • last month

It’s lovely you are considering your grandchild and spending time with them. But go slow. Don’t make any big plans for them in the space immediately beyond being welcoming and ready to host them. Set up your home for your use not the occasional babysitting time. Or at least make it dual purpose. A pack n play can go anywhere and that’s kind of the point. I probably wouldn’t give up an office space and would want to keep that option for myself.

  • last month

lol can you tell how excited I am to welcome this baby into our family? Now that calmer heads have prevailed and I realize we can just as easily put the pack ‘n’ play in the existing office and set a changing pad on the credenza in there…what to do with this empty half of the room?

  • last month

Wow Jan, this is beautiful! Thank you so much for taking the time to put all this together. I'm ready to get started!

I've found the nightstands and throw and will get them ordered.

If you don't mind, I have a few questions about some of the other items:

For the prints -- Which finish should the frames be? What size for the two on either side of the window seat?

What color would you suggest for the window seat cushion?

For the throw pillows -- where did you find them (especially the one in the middle) and what sizes should they be?

Thanks again, I feel like I finally have a direction and a jumping off point for this room.

Seems you are off and running!: )

Got a local upholstery shop who has also got fabric on bolts? All of them can order, but easy peasy to find a light gray in linen or similar.

You simply measure your window seat.

    Probably 18" x 60", something like that?

You ask the shop for a cushion, with 2" - 3" foam.

You want a "wrapped" , "boxed", "NO welt" cushion, with a zipper in the backside.

    Done: )

Welt is nothing but a dust collector, and not necessary. If you WANT it? Skinniest they have.

You can even do this online.......I just did an example 18" x 3" x 60"

    Exactly as I described above.

You can provide your own fabric as well. C.O.M

If you can't resolve the issue and can't return the pieces you could have them refinised to your desire. If you are handy you could even do it yourself. I would recommend getting on yelp and giving Ethan Allen a scathing review. They are such a big company that might not be as impactful as it would with a smaller furniture company.

Lamps. There are Suki Alabaster Table Lamps (West Elm) already on the night tables in the photo. They do perfectly what we need bedside lamps to do. Except filling the tall, narrow space directly above the night tables. I see it too and we do need something there. Mirrors?

Maybe a plant on one side and a photo on the other! I think mirrors would look too cluttered with the art over bed.

    NOPE! nope.......nope?

    You need REAL lamps

They are "jewelry". They are a "frame"

    They need a height of 25 - 28 inches.

Those are a weeny accent and not everything you see online is a great idea.

Especially when NOT your room, or your stuff.

    You tell me...?

I thought they were candles lol

    ^^

ps...........The white lamps, the brighter art, and the bench......brighten the entire space.

  • last month

Oh boy. I see exactly what you’re saying about contrast and the white brightening the room. The same is likely true of the rest of our house and my entire wardrobe (but that’s a whole ‘nother story) :/

I’ve ordered the two prints for either side of the window. Estimated delivery is 11/12.

And I found a print that I really like for above the headboard, but would have to order it as two canvases to get the size right. Will this work? I found it at Elephant Stock. Has anyone heard of, or purchased from, them?

I threw a couple of mirrors in just to see how it looks. I really don’t want to put tall lamps on the night tables, so hoping we can get creative and figure something else out.

  • last month

Jeesh, even the throw I picked out looks “muddy”. Going back to Jan’s original suggestion.

  • PRO

Ask anyone who knows me how often I change the advice : ) ?

Do I think that looks great? Not so much, but this isn't my room, it's yours.. It's the over think, and a clutter up of a simple thing, jmho.

Not to mention there are a billion lamps and my mock up was just that. A mock of nearly endless ways to make a room come alive with good proportions and the extras that make it inviting. Endless ways to do that!

Do I ever "skip" the bedside lamp? No.....I guess not .

    You have to do you.

I agree that lamps are your friend….and if you’re concerned about loosing nightstand surface space then look at wall hung plug in sconces. Well placed small scale art can hide the cords.

    Sofia thanked thinkdesignlive
  • last month

lol I must come across as a lamp-hater. Thanks for the plug in-sconce suggestion. It got me thinking about other ways lamps could work here. I moved away from bedside lamps for two reasons.

I want something that could be turned on/off without getting out of bed. The inline toggle switch on this little alabaster lamp is perfect for that. But other lamps may have that feature too. Or a switch on the base that could be easily reached from bed (like in some hotels, I guess).

I also want lampshades that are not fabric mounted on a harp. I'm tired of fussing with them tilting, twirling, seam adhesive yellowing, etc. That's why I liked the alabaster shades on the little lamps we have now. No fuss and easy to dust. I'll admit that I didn't look around too much. These lamps had an easy to reach switch and non-fabric shades, so I bought them :) But they can be replaced if I look harder and find something else that'll work better here.

And over-thinking? Guilty as charged. Years, no decades, of flawed design decisions (as we see here with these little bedside lamps, the print over the bed, and the original night tables) with a pinch of neuro-spiciness thrown in and I can spin a bit.

So I'll work on the lamps. In the meantime, would love some thoughts on the two canvas prints from Elephant Stock over the headboard.

Help me lord... dear lordy help me!?

Virtually Any lamp on this earth can have an in line switch installed on the cord, to your inch of location!! Go to the ACE hardware store, and they will probably do it FOR you. Watch a simple You Tube video!!

A decent lamp requires no adjusting of shade unless you jiggle when dusting.

Good lord, this kind of "over think thing"...makes me 100% nuts, right along with 4000K lighting! Gee..how welcoming..to our surgery center lol

    Then...

I might have to dust, it might even need a new shade in six - ten years and all the roadblocks to the very simplest of efforts in housekeeping thrown in front of a result, which I would understand in a nursing home.......you're frail for heavens sake.

But ? I have a 97!!! year old "gal pal" in independent senior living who does her "bedmaking" better and neater than I do...and still likes to iron her sheets.
