First frost here in WV

last month

We had our first "lite" frost overnight right on schedule. Not a killing frost yet which I expect most likely in late Oct/early Nov. . I'm still dealing with deer coming in overnight and any daylilies that were not given a cloche are being "trimmed" by the deer. I've also had raccoon, skunk and rabbit visits over the last couple of weeks. I never know what I'll see on the cam recording in the morning. Have to get the deck umbrellas put away for the season and no bat returning so far but we shall see what I find today.

I finished all the mulching and now have to start emptying the pots with annuals in them. I have a clematis in a large plastic container that I need to figure out if I should plant it or just dig a hole and put the container in and just leave it till next spring. We have had rain but not torrential downpours so far but enough to keep things moist.

Maple and oak trees are turning but not as colorful as in past years. I can't wait till next spring to see how the plantings do over the winter and finally get the fencing in place.

So you are on schedule with your approaching winter change over. It's 90 here today, but a change is coming they promise. Yeh, but when? Still no rain......I bet you can't wait until your fence is up. If you've got rabbits coming in as well as deer, you're like a smorgasbord of culinary delights for all these critters. Racoons and Skunks are very bad about carrying rabies, so watch yourself out there...........Do you have a greenhouse? I sure wish I had even a small one.........Maryl

Sound like most of you are dodging the first frost in your areas. We are due for another round of rain on Sunday/Monday. Temps now in the 40's in the mornings and highs to low 70's but may change midweek again and only get into the 60's. Perfect for cleaning out the rest of the gardens.

Maryl: No greenhouse but it is on my wish list. Maybe next year after the fence goes up. I've seen one by Backyard Discovery that is perfect for here but out of my price range.

    Have a great weekend all.

No frost here yet, but maybe some in the coming week. I'm still planting daylilies.

I've planted more than 30 so far. I'm unlikely to get them all planted before a hard freeze. But I have a shed and a garage to store the remaining pots in, so the ones that don't get in the ground should be OK.

I would say to plant the clematis. It will be fine with mulch.

I suspect that there will still be time to get pots into the ground. If root systems are developed and locations ready, they are probably better in the ground than staying in a pot. Granted, sometimes here, November can turn nasty cold; and I suspect that Mother Nature will make up for the above-normal fall temps.

No frost here yet, but night temperatures will drop down into the 40's next week, so bringing in all the C&S in the next few days........I'm afraid what Mantis said about pay back for the warm autumn will come true. Haven't even thought about moving all my daylilies pots to their winter quarters yet............. Rain all week-end. Hooray for that............Maryl

We had frost here on Wed. and Thurs. of the past week, and a light freeze of 33 degrees.

We have had frost for the past 4 days as the mornng temps have been in the low 30's. Our deer problem got worse as a buck(s) has decided to rub on 3 of our unprotected trees. We found the damage yesterday. My fault for not getting the fencing around those trees faster. Today we will get that done. I've googled to find the best solution for the damage so the trees do not die.
