You’re talking a whole lot of money for window replacement, because you have to redo the wall framing and exterior too. If you are going to aim that high with the invasiveness, you might as well do the full gut and not be imprisoned to old cabinets and bad layouts.

Talk about old cabinets and bad layouts! Don’t waste a dime on anything that is not cheap DIY. The whole thing needs gutted, with a new layout, and all new everything.

Don’t waste your money here when there is SO much that needs to be done. The window thing is great, but needs to happen after you’ve torn everything out and can redo the wall framing. The cabinets are old and terrrible. The layout with tiny cooking island is worse. This just needs everything done.

Pennies need to turn into hundreds here in order to start any project. It will snowball out of control and downhill as soon as those counters are demoed. They are probably holding the cabinets together, they are so old. The layout is horribly unsafe, and dysfunctional.

Generally, you don’t put new counters on old cabinets.

I get that you want to replace those counters and that backsplash if only to lessen the risk of having a seizure every time you walk into the space. Removing that material is a big job, and a dirty one, so you want it done before you move in. But recognize that you are making a temporary fix. You will not be keeping anything you put in there now, so think IKEA butcher block, laminate, or solid surface. Absolutely not stone. Go for a neutral look, like a blonde wood or an off white that you can live with. You got some very nice renderings on Facebook, use those as your guides.

I agree with others that this is really about saving up for a whole kitchen remodel rather than piecemealing changes here and that over time might not be the best layout for your whole kitchen.

Figure out the budget for a future remodel - including the window work. Minimum $60K if you are frugal? How long will it take you to save that much? What kind of simple touch ups can you do that will last you that long?

Read about painting tile countertops. There are a million tik tok videos. It probably doesn't last long but you can do touch ups. Will it get you through a few years of being able to look at this kitchen and while you save for a new one?

If you want to remove countertops, try the island first and see how much damage happens to the cabinets. Save, save, save.
