Shower glass too short! WWYD?

last month

For our bathroom remodel, our glass shower doors just came. Our shower was remodeled and the ceiling is 9 feet. Our old glass doors were 84” tall. The remodeled shower is more open to the ceiling instead of wall overhang to meet the glass to the ceiling. We expected the new glass doors to be the same height but seeing the remodeled shower, taller glass doors would have been fine too (up to 96”) but the doors are 80”. We paid an extra $750 to get ever clear coating put on (the 10 year warranty product as shower guard was not an option). We are super disappointed as the shower glass is about an inch below the shower head. What should we do? I really like our GC but we obviously expected the glass to be at least as tall as our old glass doors. The glass is on two sides of the shower.

Pictures would help. But you assumed unfortunately. Up to you the next step if can live with it or not. I would expect that you will need to pay at the very least a portion of the cost however. Is this a custom frameless door and panel, slider, off the shelf unit? Again context is key.

All custom. You think we couldn’t assume that the glass doors would be just as high as they were before? The shower head is in yhe exact same place but the walls are way more open. Here are pics from before and current

Btw, the wood beam is not exactly the finish we wanted and we thought they would give us options but they just did it. We never said a word about it because we figured we should have been clear from the beginning. Also, we had asked several times about Shower Guard but they had already done the doors and forgot about it so they said our only option was the Clear Shield (or Ever Clear?) for $750. We just paid even though it seemed high. So, it’s not like we are hard to work with. Despite the shower door issues, they have been GREAT to work with and we have been really pleased with their work (they because GC is two guys who have a business together).

So all of that should have been specified during design, what did your drawings call out.

" So the assuming has gone their way too. "

No, unfortunately, not blaming you but this all needed to be hashed out before the work started, between the architect/designer and yourself. Never leave decisions like that up to the builder, you needed to be a bit more proactive on the front end. I am not trying to bash you only stating.

That being said, I think the shower glass looks fine as is. I would be disappointed on the Showerguard versus after market applied product but. Just becomes a point where you need to decide if this is the hill you want to die on an take the stance that you want what you want. I would expect the GC to back back however and again just how much you want to push.

Well, never mind, the doors just are lower because of changes in the floor. We might have preferred higher glass but didn’t communicate that and they did the same as before which is totally acceptable. All good!

EDIT - I was typing my post before you posted yours - and didn't see it.

Sheri - I think that it is reasonable to assume that your new glass doors would be as tall as the ones installed before the work started. Does your contract have a scope of work? If so, exactly what did it say related to your new glass doors?

If you'll share the language contained in the contract with me, I'll be able to better assist you.

Unfortunately, you can never assume anything with these projects.

The glass door guy/company probably never saw the original shower and was only brought in once the new shower was ready for final glass measurements. They give you the cheapest glass height that will do the job and don't consider that you might want to pay more for a certain look, specially with high ceilings.

Never assume anyone working on your house can read your mind!

My shower glass is 91" high and I was there with the glass guy/company to measure and come up with that exact height for my specific shower design.

they should still be functional and capture the spray, so they won't be something that will drive you insane long term. ;-)

It sucks when such an expensive project becomes a learning experience, but that's what it is. Next project you know to get drawings for everything, approve orders in writing with specified measurements, colors, finishes, and coatings for everything. And still... you'll have disappointments.

You are soooo lucky to have had good GCs who .you like and are not trying to lie, cheat, cut corners.

Unless specified, you'll see a standard. In "custom" there are few that match between builders.
