Dining Room Decor Decisions

We are looking for help with my daughter’s dining room. Most items are second hand, but the rug, especially, does not work. Maybe something darker and plain? The rug currently under the table is supposedly green, but looks grey. Any and all suggestions on the room are appreciated. Thanks SO much!

The furniture is nice! the rug needs some more warmth (brown) in it so it will visually relate to the floors and furniture. A new light fixture will make a huge difference.

IMO the art is just blah so something with a bit of life in it for color would be great. The rug IMO is fine not sure what she does not like about it That light has got to go so she should choose chandelier she likes . The window seems odd is this a basement suite and is she renting ?

The walls seem an odd color and they’re casting that onto the furnishings/rug. Are they silver gray? Is your daughter able to paint the walls?

Agree that a new light fixture would help - more, warmer light would really change the room.

Yeah, the wall art is dull.

    The wood floors look nice.

I agree the table and chairs are nice. a new light and rug would be great, some art that has a bit more life to it as well. the space does feel a bit over furnished and tight with the sideboard and whatever the metal piece is. can the metal piece go and give the chairs a bit more breathing space?

I agree with littlebug that the wall color looks wrong. So whatever you decide to do about the rug, repaint if she's not renting and/or can paint. The color of the rug will lead you in a direction for the wall color. I can't tell which size rug will work in this room, but don't overlook having a remnant cut to the right size with bound/finished edges to get the right size at an affordable price. Sometimes the 8 X10 or 9 X 12 stock sizes aren't right for a particular room.

Thanks for all the help. i think the wall color is Behr silverdrop. we can change that…not sure yet to what! any suggestions for the light or chandelier that woukd look nice with the table and chairs? The rattan blinds are down on two french doors that ooen out onto a patio. i think my daughter keeps tgem down for privacy, but they can be raised to allow in natural light. The dpors with window in between have always looked odd to me. i really appreciate the suggestions to change the art and rug.

Thank you for all of thd help! Would anyone be willing to suggest a better light for over the table? we will kook into a different rug and then, will coordinate paint to match. The current color is Behr Silverdrop. The rattan shades are down on two French doors that open out to a deck. I think the window in between the doors look odd. Once we get rid of the art, rug choice might be easier, but i still am a bit unsure of what to do with this room at the moment.

Any new art should hang at eye level on the wall. Not sure if the leaning art is intentional or not. Warmer rug and wall colors will point you in the direction of a light fixture. Agree that the glass cart should be moved elsewhere.

A chandelier of some kind would be lovely. I’m partial to linear type ones with multiple bulbs. I think the wet could potentially work if there were plants and maybe some other displayed items on the cabinet that had colour. You could then add a table centrepiece that also had colour and definitely get a new rug. I don’t know if the walls are a problem in real life as computers and screens are often deceiving.

    Great second hand scores!

    1. First impression is a need for new chandelier. Light fixtures feel like art to me - they are so personal, what someone does or does not like. I'd go for something in a MCM vein. Go to Etsy and search MCM chandelier. Just make sure you get one with multiple bulbs and use warm bulbs, nothing too cool.

    2. Select a warm creamy off white wall color. Maybe something that matches the cream colored shapes in the wall art. It will lighten up the room and look great with the wood tones and be fine no matter what rug or art ends up being in here over the years.

    3. If she's on a budget, consider rugs carefully. A lot of cheap rugs look -- well really cheap. But some cheap rugs look fine. Don't go for a cheap oriental or print look rug. I'm a fan of Ikea sisal rugs when I'm on a budget. Then over the years she can wait to find a perfect rug on Facebook Market place or wherever else she finds second hand scores.

    4. Once you get the wall color, get a door shade in that same color. The current bamboo one is just a third huge wooden rectangle in a small space. It makes things feel tight. Get one that disappears into the wall color. No bar cart either.

She's lucky to have her mom helping her out!

Suggest leaning MCM with a neutral or geometric rug. Is it possible to move table over so it’s centered under the light, as that will have a big impact on the lighting‘s style and the room.

Returning large rugs ordered online rugs can be a hassle. If the site has free shipping and returns, she can order the smallest size available to see if she likes it. If it looks good, she can order the correct size and send the small version back

^ agree I have done this before, usually there’s a 2x3 rug that’s easy to return

I like this Sherwin Williams color. Pretty light without much gray cast.

Maureen's inspiration photos and advice are wonderful. Just chiming in that wall paint should be changed to the warm white she suggests. This, alone, will make a huge difference in echoing the warm wood flooring and wood furnishings and your daughter's great art works. Down with gray walls (most of the time), people!

P.S. Is the whole apartment gray? To brighten and add flow to the entire apartment, it should all be painted the same color.
