Kitchen cabinet crown molding question

We had our kitchen renovation completed a few months ago. I understand expansion and contraction but we are experiencing a lot of gaps between the crown molding and ceiling where the caulk is cracking and shrinking. We are in the northeast and the temperature has definitely dropped, but is it normal to see this so soon? Is there a certain type of caulk that may hold up better in this scenario?

There's not enough caulk to stretch, so it splits.

If the crown was held down from the ceiling maybe 3/16" or 1/4", and the resulting gap caulked, there would be ample caulk to absorb movement.

Caulk shrinks as it drys forming a slight recess which gets painted to match the ceiling.

The top of the crown forms a crisp level line, and the painted caulk blends into the never so flat ceiling.

As for caulk, my go to is Big Stretch from Sashco.
