OT - new kitty arrived

Last week we had to have our 18 year old cat Emily euthanized (old age diseases & she was really struggling, and NOT happy). I had decided, and told everyone loudly, that we were NOT going to get any more cats. HA! By a few hours after we got home from saying goodby to Emily at the vets, I had been overwhelmed by "kitty lust"! I went on the internet searching for shelters which had kittens, to no avail locally, until I tried AI, and it immediately found me a PetSmart store about an hour away which had a built in cat Adoption center inside the store, which was open whenever the store was, 7 days a week. No idea they did that.

Since it was Fall, of course all 5 if the kittens they had were 5+ months old, but I did not care. They had one employee who was in charge of the Adoption center, and she let me pick all of them up. I still have scratches on one arm from doing that, but I finally found one of them who, when picked up, immediately started purring, rubbing her head on me, and kneading her front feet on me. We took her home, and she is a total love-bug. So happy now. Here is a pic I took of her yesterday - she looks like an adult, but feels and acts like a kitten.

Her name is Trixie. We have not taken her outside yet, but she spends about 30 min a day with her harness on, and now just runs around wearing it and does not seem bothered. I am waiting for a day when it is NOT dark/cold/windy/raining.

So far, she likes all types of good quality kitten food, EXCEPT "chicken and liver". She took one sniff of it, turned around, and made the same exact scratching motions with her feet that she does in the litter box when she is covering up her poop. What an expressive way to communicate! No trouble getting THAT message!

What a beautiful cat! How long until she's found a potted rose whose base has just enough space for a kitty nap?

We have not yet introduced her to the out-of-doors, but we do have a kitty harness which we throw for her as a toy with her other toys, and she plays with it. In a week or so we will put it on her for 1 hour a day for a while. Then, when she is used to it, we will attach a leash to it and let her go outdoors on our property - of course we do not "walk" the cats - they walk us, and we just follow them around. This includes attempts to climb trees, and chase squirrels and birds (somehow the squirrels and birds are always faster than the cat, who is slowed down by having a person attached to them by a leash!). That is what we did with our previous 6 cats, and it works great.

Jackie, Your new kitty looks so sweet! I think she picked you! Its sad when we lose pets but sometimes its better that they don't suffer. Have you decided on a name yet for your new baby?

As for off topic cats..cats and gardens go like peas and carrots! No such thing as off topic cats or pets on these forums :) You should see what kind of "pets" I have haha
