We had swivel types that were adjustable height and they were very versitile and comfortable. Ours were from Scandavian Design but are discontinued altho they do have some others.

1. Definitely a low back at a minimum. I avoid a very good restaurant in my neighborhood because all they have are backless barstools & stools for table seating.(who ever heard of that ?) If you’re willing ( or can ) spend more $ I would recommend Room & Board’s, I have them in both my primary & 2d home, love them.

I’d complement the modern pendants and the black counter to create a unified feel. There are all kinds of variations of the stool below so there would be lots of price points.

To pull that area together even more, if you aren’t adding shelves between the cabinets, add some fun art/poster. If interested, look on Etsy as items are usually available in various sizes.

It is basement bar have some fun check out colored stools there are tons to choose from no wood at all either A color from the lights would be my choice 40" is an odd height so my advice get adjustable ones too
