Does the desk look ok here?

Does this desk and hutch look ok in our dining room? We rarely use the dining table but the desk gets used a lot and we dont have another area to put it. Any suggestions?

There doesn’t seem to be much room between the desk chair and the table. I see that you may have removed a dining chair or two? Can you turn the table the other way?

Mentioning chairs, the desk chair looks really out of place. Could you get one that blends better with your table and chairs?

No, makes the room look confused.

Why is the table on an angle? I don’t think it works there

Practically over aethetics is necessary sometimes. You state that you use it alot & there’s no other place for it, guess it should stay. Perhaps ”style” it so that it fits in better. Maybe a nice large live plant/small tree in that corner next to the slider? More colorful larger art? I’d remove those small objects on top, maybe ( or leave empty ) place another easy care plant ( e.g., a Pothos ) in a basket or nice pottery on top instead? Lots of possibilties, even, as suggested, a less bulky, but still comfortable desk chair.

If you don't use the dining room to eat, turn the entire room into an office. If possible, turn the table the other way and use that as your desk. You could still keep the tall desk in the dining room to house paper, pencils, files, books, etc. Move the dining chairs elsewhere and have the office chair set up at the dining table/desk. You could still use the room for dining if need be.

The desk looks fine there. What is off is the angled table. As others have suggested, can you turn it so it runs the other way in the room? If not, could you place it against a wall or the railing with only one side of it usable until it's pulled out for a larger group.

Do you need the upper hutch part of the desk? I think it would work better to not have that in the room.

Below is an example of how to do an office/dining room combination room.

Below you could use a table as a desk - or I would just use the computer desk area against the wall for work + add a dining room table under the light fixture:

There are dining tables that have drawers in them (like the one below) which are helpful when using it as a desk.

Below is just showing desks against one wall with a built-in that can be used partially for office supplies + as a buffet for a dining room. A smaller round table can be placed in the room - if you purchase one that has extensions leaves, you can have it function as a table for more than four people.

This dining/office combo room below uses pieces of furniture that work against a wall in order to make an office area on one side + a banquet + table for the dining table on the other side:

Here is just an example of using a dining table as a desk that can then be transformed into a dining table when needed:

Below is another table that has been placed into a little cubby area on the wall when it's used as a desk for an office - and then can be pulled out in order to fit more chairs all the way around the table in order to use it as a dining room.

This table below expands from 20" to 99" - it could easily be used as a desk and also expanded when needed to be a large dining table. The below types of expandable tables are pretty inexpensive.

The below table has self storing extra leaves - it can be a 55" desk or over an 80" table:

It is available from about $500 - $800 on Amazon + comes in around eight different wood tones/colors.

You can use your existing dining table as a desk - you don't have to purchase new furniture. You could add a buffet that would work for storing some office supplies + items for your dining room if needed.

Could you part with your dining table and get a small to medium sized round dining table? Removing the top of desk is a nice suggestion as well, with another desk chair that bests suits. With that said, you may still need the wheels? If storage from the top of the desk would be missed, you could find a small vintage cabinet with drawers for the corner at the slider and place a plant on top of that.

I think the desk looks fine. I would straighten the table. I'm assuming you have a 4th chair for the table? I would line 2 chairs up on each long side of the table (no chairs at end of table unless needed) .

The desk needs to stay since there is no other place for it. If your budget permits, buy a long console that does double duty - as a desk and as a buffet, etc. when you use the dining room.

Even though you don’t use the dining table very often, it sounds like room is well used and probably very visible from other areas. In making the desk decision, maybe consider creating a more inviting space (over time if needed). In answer to your question though, looks like the upper desk portion is not needed and desk will be too long for the suggestion below.

Consider selling and looking for a more compact design (try Marketplace) that will fit on the right of the sliding door with a non-office chair. It‘s location won’t interfere with the table and chair can also be used at table when needed. Add art, lighting and a nice bonus is being able to use the surface as a handy serving area.

The rest may not be of interest, but I always like to look at the bigger picture. Consider adding art on the larger size to fill the now blank wall (seems you like plants). That wall will now ground the room, which is really needed.

Straighten the table as there will be more room with the desk gone and an updated linear chandelier will have a big impact.

Add a large clay bowl and when empty it will still add interest. Adding seasonal greenery, twigs and flowers will look great and will be enjoyed when working.

It may be that the table is angled to allow access to the sliding door. If we knew the furniture and room dimensions, we could provide better suggestions.

I was thinking a round dining table could be doable. Maybe with one with removable leaf? I had posted that previously but perhaps not in the cards. Definitely art above desk if you remove that top piece. I believe it was mentioned that this piece was inherited and this is the only place for it, so imagine it’s a keeper and has sentimental value. That wall with the desk could really dress up the place with still using the desk bottom part. I was going to mention painting it a lighter color but not sure if you wanted to tackle that or change it, since it’s apparently a piece that’s been in the family for quite some time :).

@Alice the original post did not say this is a heritage piece, and the OP hasn't responded since then.
